You can just see the headlines:

"MLS and Real Madrid in $60 Million bidding war after Posh seen shopping in downtown Newark."

or perhaps not.

Well, I can't see the metros play this year but my Metros Hat and ESC scarf were worn with pride at Old Trafford last night. I just long for the time that Metros have a 30,000 seater place where everyone (Including all 22 players) believe that you can score two goals in 10 minutes to win a game 6-3.

what's this doing in an MLS team forum?

Anyway, I think he's on his way out and headed to Real Madrid. He didn't start the Arsenal match either and he just proved to the best team in the world he can score against them with ease.

If you don't have a game firmly put away after a Ronaldo hat-trick, you are not the best team in the world.

Real simple: He would be playing for the MetroStars if he came to MLS. That's why this belongs in the Metros team forum. I'll talk about that later if you wish.

Let me try to keep this short for now and explain a little about why his moving here (if he is indeed going anywhere) would make sense if one thinks about it:

First of all, this would be a tremendous challenge for David. Absolutely the biggest challenge he could ever hope to find after doing it all in Europe. To be the guy to put soccer up and over in the U.S. would be a great achievement.

Second, it is the one move he could make that would save face for all involved in this whole Manchester United mess with Alex Ferguson. Man U can't let him go to another EPL club, that's clear. If he goes to a Continental club, he would be considered a traitor by many in the UK. The thought of David Beckham wearing the jersey of a Spanish or Italian club is unthinkable to almost all Brits, even Man U haters. The outrage would be astounding. That would not be fair to David, but it is the reality. And Man U would take a massive hit for supposedly driving him out. They'd both come out with their reputations damaged.

However!! If he were to leave Man U and come to our shores for the noble cause of establishing soccer in the U.S. and helping turn MLS into truly "Major" League Soccer, it would minimize the damage of this tragic breakup. The British still may not be crazy over losing him, but it would be a hell of a lot easier to deal with. Our league and clubs are not threatening to the FA. David will not come back to haunt them in the tournaments against the Continentals. He could be considered their gift to U.S. soccer! And think of the dough they could make coming over here to play EPL-MLS friendlies, against a Beckham-led MLS all-star squad or the Beckham-led MetroStars.

Third, there will be those who would accuse Beckham of doing it only for the money. Yes, that old line of bull. Let's put it this way: his leaving will be more readily accepted by the great British football public if he is cashing his paycheck for American dollars rather than Euros.

Finally, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out why the MetroStars are the only place he would want to go if he decided to play here. And it's the only place MLS would put him. If you need me to spell that out, I will. But as of right now, if this talk is serious and if David is serious, it could be a marriage made in Heaven!

A wild thought... Chinaglia and his soccer-camp buddy make good on their promise of reviving the Cosmos as an independent team playing an international schedule, and sign Beckham as their #1 guy. Put up or shut up, Giorgio.

Folks, this isn't going to happen. As much as it would thrill me to have Becks on our side of the pond, it just does not seem feesible, especially with MLS' single-entity system, that we could compensate him, let alone, hinge on him the task of 'pushing' MLS over the edge and make it "Major." It's either going one of two ways...either he will still be with United or he will transfer to Real...any chances of him coming to the US are a few years off...that was the logical side of me...now for the dreamer...

Man that would kick a$$!! That would show the world that we've arrived...having arguably one of the world's best players in our very own little league!! Take that Europe!!

There, now I feel much better....

Peace...

Dude, if you´re talking about the Real-Machester of this april 23 2003 ;)
The Two goals: the first one was a Casillas lacks of reaction (Or a fake)! (but this one can pass as a good Beckham´s shot) but the second one was an Hierro´s own-goal!
What a great Beckham was for sure :D

Frankly, the single-entity system is just why this could be worked out with a minimum of problems and complaints. He'll be signing with the league, not an individual team.

As far as compensation is concerned, it was only last week that the New York Daily News had an article about the American Basketball Association's attempt to sign Lew Alcindor (Kareem Abdul-Jabbar) many years ago. To make a long story short, the New York Nets, who at the time played on Long Island, had the territorial rights to Alcindor but knew they couldn't compete with the NBA on salary. The league called all the owners together and worked out a deal whereby all the teams in the ABA would contribute to paying Alcindor's salary if the Nets could land him. They all knew what a milestone it would be for the league to get the guy. As it turned out, they were still outbid by the Milwaukee Bucks.

Whatever MLS could afford to pay Beckham would be added to by the tons of endorsement deals he would be showered with by being here. Think of the dollars that would be thrown at him and the publicity MLS would get by his mere presence in the league. Especially being based in the New York area.

I just claimed that it didn't seem feesible, based on MLS past actions...if Beckham proclaimed that he was coming here, then I am certian the league and investors would set something up to accomodate him....and you're right, the endorsements he would land would probably rival the NBA and NFL stars...it just seems to impossible to believe that it could happen....trust me, I would be all for this if it came to pass....

More Wishful thinking:
IF Beckham were to come over to MLS, it would seem most likely, as many have pointed out, to be later in his career (at least a few more years away). That said, he would have earned untold millions (in Pounds Sterling mind you) in salary and product endorsements (ala Michael Jordan) by that time (now in fact). Hopefully he is investing this money wisely and is ALREADY at the point of financial independence for life (regarless of what his wife also pulls in).

If he, as he hints in the article, would be coming here for love of the States, the game, and a challenge, it would seem he could serve as a great embassador for the game here, and not make salary an issue (i.e. play for an MLS-affordable wage as an SI).
End Wishful thinking...
No more Lothars please...

The main reason we won't see Beckham State side anytime soon (now don't get mad everyone) is 'cuz he still has a few years of quality soccer in him....

Beckham in MLS would end his playing for England real quick, if Macca can move to Real Madrid and win 2 European Cups (maybe 3) and be a constant /glaring ommision from the England team sheet than Beckham in MLS would put him in the remotest international wilderness with no coming back.
