I often see player match ratings from 1-10, with ratings typically ranging between 4 and 7. Obviously these are all subjective, but there still must be some guidelines on how one applies the ratings. I've seen a definition from the BBC and a different one from Sam's Army. Is there some overall guidance on what the ratings mean?

Well, on this forum I got a number of readers, but NO responses. :(

For any interested readers, here's what I've found so far, recognizing that this type of rating is purely subjective and mainly shorthand for summarizing an opinion, as well as fodder for fan discussion. I don't think a single, subjective number has any value beyond that. I do think it's interesting from that perspective, though, and for MLS, I've only seen it show up in some fan discussion groups for individual teams, not widely reported as it is in Europe.

Even for a purely subjective system, it helps to agree on some common adjectives, hence my initial query.

Championship Manager:

10 - Very rare, absolute blinder
9 - Very likely the best player on the field
8 - Be proud, you played very well
7 - Pretty good, typical match for a starter
6 - Eh, OK, you want better from a starter but OK for a bench type player
5 - Poor match
4 - Hold your nose
3 or less - Shocker, that might well be your last match of the year

BBC 1-10 System
