Onyewu beat out fellow teammates Bobby Convey, Clint Dempsey, Kasey Keller and Brian McBride to claim the award, which was determined by votes from fans (50 percent) and members of the national media and other US Soccer representatives (50 percent).

Congrats to him and the other finalists.

I think it's a good selection, Gooch representing US soccer is an interesting and slightly intimidating prospect...much more so than say a donovan. Among those who didn't win, I think McBride deserves something like an up to this moment lifetime achievement award and dempsey deserves something like a 'where the fyck are my props' award for bitchslapping the back of the net against italy.

So what's the difference between this award and the one Dempsey got a while back where he won the Honda (or was it chevy?)

this one includes both club and National team stuff, while also dealing with professionalism and stuff.

Hona award is just National team matches.

The USSF award is also older.

I think either Gooch or Convey would have been fine selections.

Ah, I see. Cool. Agree Bobby would have also deserved it, given that it includes club play. Helping a team break records for promotion/points in England is pretty damn big.

While Gooch was named to the Beglium All XI (again) and led his team into Champion's League, while also being our best player in Qualifying during the HEX.

I would have given it to Dempsey without blinking. He rose from the outside looking in and was our best player in the cup... also, he was good in every single game he played in.

However, Onyewu played well and doesn't not deserve the award.
