View Full Version : DO Liverpool Supporters support Celtic or hate them like they do with Everton?

i posted this under the Celtic message boards but really didnt get a good answer,,do liverpool fans support Celtic as there second team or the team in scotland...im a Celtic-Liverpool fan and was wondering if them too would go together..similar to bein an arsenal-man. u. fan, u know...

Frankly, this part confused me, as I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not. However, I can say that we've had close ties with Celtic for quite a while. The first game after Hillsborough was played in Celtic Park, and before the match EVERY person in attendance belted out YNWA, and there wasn't a dry eye in the place.

I swung pro-Rangers while Reyna was there, as my ties to Celtic aren't THAT strong, and I have to cheer for my fellow Yanks. However, there has been a historical bond between Celtic and Liverpool, and you are FAR more likely to find Reds fans cheering for Celtic in the Old Firm. Hope that helps . . .

GENERALLY...

liverpool fans support rangers (both protestant)
everton fans support celtic (both catholic)

i don't where this liverpool/ celtic 'friendship' ************ came from...oh yeah, the BBC...

That's pretty much my story as well--although I'm interested (believe it or not :)) in Scouse's comment about the protestant-catholic links. I had heard that those loyalties existed a long time ago, but had weakened quite a bit in recent years.

How on earth was I meant to know that so many screaming Celts would come all this way for a bloody midweek testimonial for one of our players?!? Don't these guys have anything better to do? I jest, of course. What on earth could be better than a day out to Anfield? Still it would have been comforting to have been the owner of five foot nine inch wide shoulders as I took a deep breath and attempted to camouflage my Redness amongst ten thousand Highlanders resplendent in their green and white.

Only one dodgy moment.

As the green hordes chanted reverently for Shankly so the Kop responded in kind for big Jock Stein. Well sort of reverently, anyway. "Jock Strap!" they chanted as only witty Kopites, wanting to put at risk the life of one of their own, can! Fortunately our Celtic cousins never deciphered this light-hearted affront to their messiah.

My story started before Alan Edge but I love his book. The Liverpool/Celtic rivalry for me started in 1964/5 when both teams were just venturing into the European Cup. And we still had the lingering secular problems back then.
There were a couple of pretty rowdy matches that year in the quarter finals. Not only did Cally have to dodge the full backs but also the whiskey bottles as well.
One poor kid got hit on the back of the head with one and spent a happy 4 hours in surgery.
But there was no real hatred just a good rivalry, in fact I got a push/jump start in my old car from a bunch of guys in green because the battery was flat when I got out of the ground

i prefer Rangers, but thats just because Claudio Reyna used to play there

I always had a soft spot for Rangers growing up in Liverpool, must have been all those Orange Lodge meetings my Dad went to!!

But I never hated Celtic.

And after we got Kenny, well we were forever grateful ...

Not sure the Protestant catholic still matters in Liverpool. In the catholic areas of Northern Ireland you will find alot of Liverpool supporters.

Also I have seen alot of celtic liverpool scarves and there seems to be a relationship between the clubs. If nothing else they share ynwa. At the very least it seems acceptable to support both celtic and liverpool.

nevertheless, there is a trend for catholic families to support everton and for protestant families to support liverpool. obviously these allegiances are then passed down through the generations.
