I was flying down to the Tampa area to spend Christmas with my in-laws. And who should I spot seated a row ahead of us across the aisle but someone who looked suspiciously like Kevin Payne. I figured "nah--I'm just missing DC United too much--the vendor at the burrito place I got breakfast at looked like Jaime Moreno to me--couldn't be Kevin." Went to get luggage and there was an older couple by our carousel on the flite from Dulles holding up a sign that said "Payne." So I then approached the guy once he got to the baggage and introduced myself (yes, it was Kevin Payne).

Now I'm sure I"ll get negative repped from some of you for not asking the hard questions but he was there with his inlaws and daughter (or daughters--there was at least one with him) and didn't want to intrude much on personal family time.

The summary of it all: I mentioned that a lot of us serious fans were getting antsy and eager to hear what was happening next, he was very gracious, I commented about the changes with DCU and he just beamed and said "boy, have we got some big announcements to make." I then asked "how soon are we going to hear? After Christmas perhaps?" He looked very apologetic and said, "well, we figured so many people would be out of town until the New Year, we aren't announcing anything until after January 1st."

I know, I know, I could have pumped the man for more details, confirmation on the Beckham deal, who the Brazilian is, etc. And in comparison, I think I was big enough I could have taken him had he put up a fight. But he was with family (as was I--and all of our baggage had arrived by this time). So I thanked him for running the classiest organization in MLS and said I'd be waiting January 2nd.

In conclusion: he didn't say that they were working on deals or that they expected big things to happen. As I recall, Kevin said that they had exciting announcements (plural) to make. I don't think signing Jay Nolly qualifies in his book. I think it's our Brazilian, maybe an argentine and the ownership being resolved. The ownership thing would be a big deal b/c it frees us to go after the DP candidates.

Joe - you did the right thing. No reason to give him any Payne during the holidays! Rep forthcoming.

sorry about the in-laws thing! :D

Actually, my in-laws are absolutely great--I am treated very, very, very well. I've never been able to get all of the in-law jokes others tell b/c my experience is so positive. Besides, Tampa in December instead of DC--what's not to like?

I know that this really is just confirming what we all expect, but still, it helps to hear it from Kevin Payne's mouth.

Now I just hope our new pieces can come together by late February...

The Washington Post article on Esky's sale quoted Payne to the effect that this was the last of the major off-season sales & trades - Now they have the cash to spend - Also January is the International transfer window - No new signings outside of MLS would be official until then - And after Thanksgiving and early Dec (and esp W's signing of The Land Swap Bill) that new owners wouldn't be announced until after the New Year as well - And I also expect an announcement of a sponsor for the jersey in early Jan - As far a maximal sports coverage goes, NOWS the time to do it - Redskins are dead and its not time yet for the major college bowl games around New Years - I'd say around the 4 or 5th (Thurs or Fri) of Janurary

But panic and rampant speculation is what we live for here. :( :D

You mean the cash they got for Esky isn't just going straight to KP's pocket? They might actually be spending it on an upgrade?!

Not me, I'd only give you positive rep. But rep is for children.

Anyways, he told you this confidentially. I wouldn't have said anything about it. You gotta be careful what u say in public because DC United sees the big inside picture so they ahve reasons for handling things the way they do. This is a public forum so watch what you say that's not common knowledge. My 2 cents.

Confidentially. Right. I am sure he was holding some guy he saw in an airport to strict confidence, as if he had said it to his doctor, lawyer, or priest.

Riiiiiiiiight.

Rep is for children. Pudding is for children. I still like pudding.

You missed the obvious. He is clearly going to Tampa to sign Rodney Marsh. :)

I think Kevin was amused, but he could've been bemused. You'll have to ask Vlad 'cause I was on a mission in sh!tcago's face. So in case of the latter, thanks!
