My wife and I are travelling to London in September with friends and are hoping to attend the Sept 23rd game at Anfield against Tottenham. What is the best way to get from London to Liverpool? Rent a car or take the train? If we take a train, how far is the train station in Liverpool from Anfield? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I took a train from London to Liverpool last December. It arrived in Liverpool at Lime Street Station, and I took a taxi from there to Anfield. I don't recall how far it is from the station to the stadium (I'd guess about two miles), but it seemed to far to walk to for me.

I'm sure others can give you more detailed information. But I'm hardly a world traveler -- that was the first time I'd been out of London -- and I had no problems at all.

The train ticket was about 55 pounds, but that was New Year's Eve so I don't know if it was an increased rate.

Hope that's helpful.

This brings up a point.

Should we have a traveling fans "sticky" in a similar way that Arsenal has one?

I know it might be a lot to ask of the local-regulars. But maybe a FAQ on seeing a game?

I'm not a big traveler, but I'm thinking about trying to get up there around Christmas if I can.

Take the Virgin train from Euston Station to Liverpool Lime Street. There are a variety of class options and prices go down if you book in advance. I went First class and had a breakfast of eggs and salmon with unlimited tea, coffee and juice. Service was excellent and the trains are new, sleek and very clean. About two and a half hours for the trip. Anfield is about 3 miles from the station and its all up hill. I firmly recommend a cab. There is a cab rank immediately as you exit onto Lime Street to the left a half block.

Why not, I'm going to be in the 'Pool come October. Not sure of the dates yet, got to check CL match sched.
I'll probably pick up a car though, got take my old mum to do the family rounds.

It's about 3 miles from Lime St. to Anfield. If you don't know your way about, get a taxi. It's reasonable and simple.

Beat me to it you Mick bastid!!!
You have the advantage with the trains though. Listen to LB folks, he knows how to travel.

Ta, la!

Oh and afterwards go into the Albert or Oakfields and have a pint or three before looking for a cab back. By then the crowds'll have died down and you can get a cab.

You can either get a cab from Lime Street, or if you want the local flavour (i.e. semi-pissed scousers on their way to the match;) ) get the No 27 bus from Paradise Street Bus Station, which is about five minutes' walk from Lime Street.

One thing to note: the route in a cab from Lime Street is up toward the Wallasey Tunnel, along Sheel Road through toward Everton and then right up onto Walton Breck Road. It takes 10 minutes in normal traffic and should set you back about six quid. I'm afraid local cabbies are real ********ers for taking anyone with an accent on the scenic route. Even I still get it occasionally when I take a cab up there from my home in Aigburth, because I don't have a Scouse accent.

Yeah, I can do that, but we're going to have to nominate one of the other stickies to come unstuck, so to speak, because I don't want tons of them up there.

There are frequent shuttle buses from Sandhills Station, on the Merseyrail Northern Line, to Anfield for all Liverpool home Premier League and Cup matches. Soccerbus will run for two hours before each match (last bus from Sandhills Station is approximately 15 minutes before kick-off) and for 50 minutes after the final whistle (subject to availability). You can pay as you board the bus – each single journey will cost 50p. Soccerbus is FREE for those who hold a valid TRIO, SOLO or SAVEAWAY ticket or Merseytravel Free Travel Pass.
I would recommend the soccerbus just for the experience, it the greatest laugh with all the scouse humor on show for all to see, the last time I used it 2 stupid blue noses got on and got the piss taken out of them the whole way.:D

I would take off the newbies thread.

Actually any of them could be ripe to come off. We're not a forum that is real big on using stickies. I'd hate to see the Reserve or TV threads come off though, they actually get some use.

I'm all for the travel sticky. Seems to come up every once and awhile and it would be nice to have one thread of condensed info.

also if you are staying more than one day you should check out the museum and stadium tour (no tours on matchday), however if you want to take the tour, call and book in advance...I went in April and it was sold out for the day when I arrived around 1030am. And make sure you have a pint at The Albert :)
