This thread is about specific things that happen on his show. If you want to get into Jim Rome as a personality, there is a thread specifically for that here (http://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=36022).

What if we happen to think that Rome is a closet soccer fan?

He does seem to know an awful lot about it.

Different audience, different environment. Will he change? Will he be so outspoken? My prediction (which is usually wrong) is that he will tone down the controversial nature of his show because that is what Disney will want. Just enough controversy to increase ratings, but not too much to offend people.

What if we happen to think Jim Rome is one of the most unfunny, uninteresting, plain old bad broadcasters we've ever seen?

As I understand it, that's fine to say in this thread. If you have an issue with anything he says about soccer however, that goes in the other thread. Maybe later we can subdivide each thread into categories for those who think we should complain to him and those who think we should ignore him.

Why would I want to weed through an old thread that already has more than 5 pages of posts? Aren't we talking about a current story?
Anyway, what is the story on Rome and ESPN? I caught the end of T.K. saying something about it the other day, but he didn't give details. I did a GOOGLE news search on JIM ROME + ESPN and didn't get anything about this latest whatever-it-is. Is Rome going to be doing an ESPN radio show? What time slot? Or is this just a TV deal? It would be amusing if Rome ended up on ESPN Radio in Dan Patrick's slot. Rome was recently moved from one station to another here, and both stations made a big deal about it. It would be interesting to see what they'd say if he switched back (The station he left is an ESPN affiliate).
Not soccer related: Do you remember what Jim Rome said when Ohio State hired Jim Tressel from Youngstown State to coach their football team. It represented the demise of the program he said. Surely they hired Tressel because none of the big names were interested. Of course, he turned out to be wrong. Anyone can be wrong in reading the future. But the problem with his comment (and with most of what he says) is that it was uneducated. Tressel had been considered for big time jobs before (including Miami). Those who'd followed the story knew that Tressel's deep roots in Ohio recruiting and connections to the program's history made his an attractive candidate. Rome didn't know what he was talking about.

You may be right, but what does that say about multitude of broadcasters who are much worse?

Now what would be nice is if MLS/SUM decide to tell ESPN if they hear any obvious MLS bashing then they will start seeing who else wants World Cup rights... it's bush league all right, but MLS has invested its money and trust in ESPN, I hope MLS is willing to stand up for that investment. Just tell ESPN, if we hear Rome say that "MLS is for f*gs" then we (MLS/SUM) will try and find some way to get the World Cup off ESPN, and maybe to drag them into court... sure it's unreasonable, but hey you can certainly threaten it, and plus... I have a hard time seeing Rome's show getting too high of rating. Hell, this was a guy whose show stunk too much for Fox Sports Net... so Rome won't be in much of a position of leverage.

Holy crap. Relax dude. The fact is, Rome's ratings will blow anything MLS, WUSA, and USSF put on away. Hands down.
Why on earth would we care what ESPN's other entertainment offerings are?

And precisely what other networks are falling all over themselves to show the World Cup?
I'll give you a hint: Same number of classes Katzenmoyer passed while at OSU.

Hey hey hey - Katzenmoyer was taking a full load of 15 hours (we're on quarters here at OSU) those classes just happened to be... get ready..
- golf
- aids awareness
- music
So there he is, Ohio State's finest... anyway I will proudly declare that our standards here in Buckeye-land have gone way up (no joke). We are now the highest ranked public school in Ohio (screw you Miami U) and if you want to say our football players are all dumb... take a look at QB Craig Krenzel, majoring in pre-med molecular genetics... so are we Harvard? No. But are we Miss. St.? Hell no...
And to finally bring this back to soccer... I believe that someone else WOULD want to put on the World Cup if SUM were to threaten ESPN... whether it would be a Fox/FSN/FSW/FX combo or maybe NBC trying to bolster their piss-poor lineup by doing it like the Olympics and putting it in NBC/CNBC/MSNBC... sure it's a far out idea... but this is Bigsoccer... home of far out conjectures, half-truths, and blatant rumor-mongering.
