Anyone into this show? The fourth season just wrapped up on HBO and I've started a countdown until season 5.

There is no doubt in my mind that it's the finest TV ever produced. Not only is it an incredibly engaging cop show, but the social commentary is amazing. The criminals and cops are treated as equals, with no main character (except, really, the city of Baltimore). It's gritty, sad, incredibly realistic, and has some of the best acting I've ever seen.

I went through the entire 4 seasons in about a month. It starts off a bit slow and takes some time to get into the characters and whatnot, but once you do, you will be hooked.

I really think this show should be mandatory viewing for all Americans. It shows the inner-city in a new light and gives understanding to the messed up situation of urban America.

Anyone else as obsessed as I am?

I only get HBO on one tv, and I don't really watch the channel much, but I've caught The Wire, and I really like it. I'm trying to get at least the Season 1 dvd for Christmas.

From what I have heard, despite being titled as set in Baltimore, it is about the City of Buffalo.

I can't tell if this is a joke or not, but at the risk of sounding like a dumbass, I'll answer it as if it were a genuine question.

It is most definitely set in Baltimore, aka Bodymore, Murderland. It's all about the drug dealers, police-force politics, political corruption, inner-city public schools, etc. of that city. I've got no clue what the demographics of Buffalo are (I would imagine it's mostly blue-collar white people), but the cast of The Wire is about 66% black, mostly from the inner city or involved in the police department/political system of the city.

Rent season 1. Tell me if that's what Buffalo is like. :D

Buffalo is an extremely segregated city. Since the race riots in the 50's[?] most white people fled the city. The central and eastern parts of the city can be predominantly black.

I read somewhere that the writers were from Buffalo and that they based it on crooked cops from here. I'll try and look it up.

Edit: I think it may be purely base don Baltimore. I must have heard a distorted rumour.

Not sure where David Simon and Edward Burns (note: not Ed Burns, the director) are originally from, but Simon was a reporter for the Baltimore Sun for a bunch of years, and Burns was a Baltimore cop for a couple decades before becoming a teacher in the inner-city.

Interesting note about Buffalo. I guess my only exposure to the city is through the Bills' fans (who remind me a lot of Packer fans), and hence I thought it was a mostly white, blue-collar city.

But seriously, check out The Wire. It's slow-going at first, but I think it's the most important TV show that's ever aired.
