Many Chelsea fans I meet remind me of the football 'fans' following England during the World Cup - they wear the shirt, sing the songs & drink the beer but don't know shit.
This doesn't offend me per se - I'd rather just not speak to them about football.

Fair enough - this phenomena is probably more apparent in England, a country where everyone has a team, or at least a connection to a team even if they don't like the game.

Gerrard just put one in the net against PSV. Fantastic header

Gerrard probably edges it, but any team with Lampard in is lucky because he is a great player. I wonder if Gerrard will go to Chelsea one of these days. A Gerrard/Lampard combination in central midfield would be superb for England as they'd be able to gell together.

He talked about moving there the year the Reds won the Champs League, but decided that Liverpool was too important to him to leave. I doubt he'd turn his back on the supporters like that.

Why would he want to join a 2nd rate team with a meddling owner who knows nothing about football?

Very well. However, you must admit that the tendency to jump to certain conclusions, especially pertaining to Chelsea fans has been ridiculous at times here. I'm sure there are plenty of Chelsea fans (as well as any other fans) who support "what's hot right now" and do not possess a wealth of football knowledge, but that doesn't mean that as soon as a Chelsea supporter shows up on a thread, he/she should automatically be prepared to defend their allegiance and level of expertise to some internet junkie.
Actually, yes he/she should. In precisely the same way as you need to put your credentials up for scrutiny in any serious football chat in any pub in Britain on any given day. Get four blokes in a room and start talking footie and the first thing that happens is the elaborate ritual of establishing whether or not you're a proper fan or just some gobshite who's got Sky TV.
See how easy it is to use obvious disparities in cultural perception to make distinctions between one type of fan and another?

I might be able to take defence of Lampard more seriously if it wasn't nearly always from Chelsea fans. Most neutrals back Gerrard.

Gerrard...he's proven he can put a team on his shoulders (but hasn't been given that chance with England)...Lampard hasn't

It's what suits your argument.
It used to be said of Andy Cole...
Don't play dumb comme. Your use of Cole as an example further highlights my point. Good player but because he was not clinical he will never be considered better than his rivals and that is before you take into account that not being clinical is what lead to his failed NT career.
Also, Scholes, unfortunately thanks to Teso is not extraneous to this debate.
I did not bring Scholes into the discussion initially and only did so later to highlight the stupidity of the goal argument that Lampard supporters always fall back on.

Just like the Ballack/Lampard partnership?

Indeed.

No, the reason his international career failed was because he couldn't play with Alan Shearer. That and the fact that he was shit whenever he played for England.
If he had replicated his movement and strike rate with Newcastle and United, for England he would have played.
Was Robbie Fowler's phenomenal finishing the reason he was such a success for England? Oh wait ...
Indeed.
You are quoting leg breaker to support your point. That is the surest clue that you are talking rubbish.

And so it goes on.
Surely they are both great players with serious limitations to their game?
Limitations which become obvious when they play for England - a team with no one who can run a game.
