View Full Version : United News on Sports Talk 980

To my astonishment, Brian Mitchell and Scott Jackson had a long and very knowledgeable discussion of the coaching change today on Sports Talk 980. There was none of the usual snide references to soccer as being "unAmerican," or a sissy sport, etc., and revealed that both of them were well informed about United, the Klinsman saga and the Bob Bradley move to the USMNT, the Adu trade, and so on. They knew Novak hadn't coached before he took over here; discussed the Adu situation intelligently (BMitch had interviewed him several times and remarked on his maturity); knew that we lost to NE this year in the conference championship; and knew how many trophies we had. All in all, it was the most positive discussion of MLS soccer I've heard from this station, and was in marked contrast to the usual sneering condescension from the other so-called "sports reporters."

very cool, too bad it takes such a large amount of negative news to get an intelligent discussion out of these guys, or any sports broadcasters in this area.

Sounds like they've got someone over at 980 doing research for them. Have we found another closet United fan embedded in the sports establishment?
Who on the team do you think B-Mitch would interview now that Adu is gone?

Benny, Clyde, and Boz are all well spoken and engaging. They would be media darlings if they played hoops or for the Skins. I hope B Mitch gets to know them.

With Snyder looking to create his own Redskins Radio network, maybe Sports Talk 980 is finally going to broaden its wings and give other sports a chance. We can only hope.

As I have stated many times before: until Andy Pollin joins George Michael, WTEM is a lost cause. While individual shows may provide some coverage (and yes, Jackson is the apparent closet fan), the station's approach will remain dark ages. Pollin has stated on air that he will spike soccer coverage.
As a tangent, Czaban has made his position clear, somethng like "when the US Men reach the semifinals of the world cup, i'm all in. But until then, I am not much interested in the sport, and especially the soccer jihadists out there." He will comment upon the "world's most dangerous game" when riots and other bloody news occurs, but has no interest in pursuing the sport as a sport.

when adu was traded andy pollin made it a point to call out the barra brava on the air and say how he was sick and tired of getting hate mail from those types...he also managed to pronounce barra brava about 4 different ways in 30 seconds...i of course made sure to email him immediately about what a huge jerkoff he is

He always likes to say "The D.C. United" with an emphasis on The. He's working for a dead station with lower than whale s**t ratings.

Yeah, but in this case I consider that a bad thing. If it's a choice between 980's soccer-hating and having sports radio in DC controlled by Dan Snyder, I'll email Andy right now and tell him I'm his biggest fan.

I just switch to another station. BTW, where can I hear Mike and Mike now?

They're on Snyder's station now, but they get pre-empted a lot by pollin and czaban, especially right after redskins games.
And yeah, I'd love to have a good sports talk station in town, but all we have are bits and pieces - Mike and Mike are tolerable most of the time, even though I'm out of there when they bring Vitale on, and Brian Mitchell's and John Thompson's show are actually pretty good. That's it. That's the list.

Interesting as I don't listen to 980 any more. I suppose this is progress. I want Snyder to crush those guys -- Pollin especially.

To my astonishment, Brian Mitchell and Scott Jackson had a long and very knowledgeable discussion of the coaching change today on Sports Talk 980.Clearly B-Mitch didn't get the memo. Although I heard him and SJ discussing some other stuff in pretty good detail that wasn't just the Kornheiser/Pollin "read the sports section at you" style of show.
Too bad he's on when I'm at work.
Thx,
Jay!

Maybe not those two, but Mike and Mike do get pre-empted for redskins talk the Monday after a game. Annoying and all, but that's what my iPod is for on the way into the office...

People still listen to AM radio? Wow, I haven't since 1970-something - excepting Diceson's old Soccer Show - and if there is a United game on that isn't on TV :D
John Wilson coming on....
