I was thinking this earlier and couldn't think of a match in the last few years when they completely outplayed a class opponent. I am always finding myself wanting more from their performances recently.

Your thoughts?

Some of of defending in that Croatia game at Euro 2004 wasn't very good but were very good going forward.

In recent terms then Argentina but that was only a friendly

in competitive matches I'd probably say Turkey march 2003.

v Spain at Old Trafford on February 7th - it'll be awesome...

............................James

Richards......Woodgate......Carragher............Bridge

Lennon.........Parker..........Reo Coker..........Downing

...............Crouch............Johnson

We'll win 12-0, with Johnson diving for a record number of 8 penalties (6 of which we'll miss) - all the regulars will be too tired, too injured, too busy elsewehere and just too too...........

And toooooooo top it all, none of these will feature against Israel....

I say that England should call up all those players that aren't retired from that Germany game and see what happens. My prediction... Heskey and Beckham score 3 between them and prove the doubters wrong. Euro 2008 here we come!

England vs Turkey at Sunderland. If it wasn't for poor finishing, and 2 hand ball penalties which weren't given by the ref, we could have won that 6-0 easily. It was a pure ass raping. It's no coincidence that when we play at a Premier league style like in that game, we always seem to play brilliantly.

Shame we have an even bigger clown than Sven in charge now.

Greece practically handed 2 of those goals to us. Less said about the shambles against Switzerland the better. We were dreadful.

king was completely out of his depth and we didn't look any good until he was taken off and we played a flat 4-4-2. even then they shat all over us until they took riquelme off. it was a nice game to win but not really a great performance.

stats show that possesion was even .we had just as many good chances to score as argentina in that game .The argies had two spells of pressure which brought them goals but no way was it a case of them dominating the whole game.

the last great game in competitive matches was england v turkey.
beckhams last great game for england

I thought the france game at 2004 was a magnificent performance, just a terrible result after 2 minutes of madness. We totally dominated them for 88 minutes of the game, they werer reduced to silly crosses deep into our area which went nowhere. we had 3 or 4 chances to score, took one, missed a penalty, they should have had silvestre sent off, and then heskey, james and gerrard pissed the match away.
