TIDE AND DOWNY ADDED TO MLS WASH
Procter & Gamble Brands Join MLS Corporate Roster

NEW YORK (Monday, April 21, 2003) - Soccer United Marketing announced today that Tide and Downy have signed on as Promotional Partners for the 2003 Major League Soccer Season. Tide and Downy, America's favorite laundry Brands, are market leaders in their respective Fabric Care categories.

"Major League Soccer welcomes Tide and Downy to its family of corporate and promotional partners said Mark Noonan, MLS Executive Vice President. "This partnership enables Tide and Downy to utilize various avenues such as premium giveaways, in-stadium promotions, Tide Soccer Title nights, as well as MLS logos, video footage, and player likenesses to associate themselves with our New Soccer Nation."

"Tide and Downy are pleased to be associated with Major League Soccer. The sport of soccer enables us to reach consumers right at the "point of dirt," which is very relevant to Tide and Downy," said Ron Salvati, Project Manager for P&G. "Our MLS partnership gives our soccer program instant credibility with our merchandising partners and enables us to activate promotions that will be creative and productive."

My wife buys both products. No need to change now.

I guess the MLS equipment guys will be real happy with this sponsorship. It's now easier to get out grass stains and all jeresys will feel super soft and have that line dried freshness. ;)

BTW- Check out Tide's Soccer Family of the year contest.

So where does this fall in the official gamut of things: Official Sponsor, Corporate Partner, Supplier, etc...

I don't see a Promotional Partners section. It also sounds like a one year deal. though I am sure with renewal options.

Is this similar to the Nestle Milo deal? I seem to remember Tide or some soap company sponsoring some tshirt event - and getting handed the small box of soap.

Is this in that category?

Someone please explain whether this is a revenue enhancing deal or just a way to defray promotional/marketing costs.

The bar of soap is Irish Spring, made by P & G's competitor Colgate Palmolive. However, bar soaps are not considered in the same category as Laundry Detergents or Fabric Softeners.

I thought Downy was fabric softener (perhaps the one with Snuggles the bear), and the "Quicker Picker-Upper" paper towel brand was Bounty.
