this is nothing but projection. But four years of development, who do you think wins the spot?

Cherundolo, despite a horrid start at Hannover is starting become the steady right back we missed so much, one of the many key players who was not apparently in best form in the WC. But his experience is invaluable, and nothing can take away from his knowledge of the game. We will be 31 next go around, maybe his age will catch up with him, and it is unlikely the learning curve is likely to go up any time soon. He's a solid player but could we do better?

Spector IMO is the favorite right now, one of our best young prospects getting lots of time in with a struggling powerhouse in West Ham. Its just not falling right for the Hammers right now, but from the games ive seen recently, save for one, he's improved ALOT since his last season at Charlton. He is right on the border, dangerously close to taking of Cherundolo. He can play anywhere along the back line, and play it respectably well (see Scottland match). He will be starting in 2010, its just a question of if its on the right or left side.

last is the prospect with most upside of all in my opinion, but is still a project; Marvel Wynne. His cross and touch need work, but god the kid is fast! My jaw drops every time i see him run the field. he's got 4 years under the guidance of Bruce Arena to fine tune his skills, and if he shows the learning curve he has been late this MLS season these next few years. He is without a doubt the best candidate for a position. Wynne is a big if, but if he turns out to be the player we hope he is, he will be one of the best wingers there is. I think he is able to do it.

my prediction for 2010:

------------Onyewu------Gibbs-----------
Wynne-----------------------------Spector

gets all of our best players onto the field; we just pray Gibbs can stay healthy.

Nobody beats Marvel... If he can stay healthy ...he will terrorize on the right flank...

It's Cherundolo's spot to lose.

Shouldn't he at least terrorize on the right flank in MLS before he's given the chance to do it for the USMNT?

I'm just sayin'.

in four years under Bruce Arena he will make Cherundolo look foolish. Spector on the left is a great idea and I can't agree w/ you anymore.

my predicted back four for 10 is the same as yours.

All three have a good shot at it, but I'm going to guess Dolo. Experience is valuable for a defender. Tony Sanneh was 31 in 2002, and he did alright.
Wynne is a big if, but if he turns out to be the player we hope he is, he will be one of the best wingers there is.
A "winger" is an attacking wide midfielder or a wing forward in a 4-3-3. I'm only pointing this out because a lot of people on BigSoccer use the term incorrectly.

I like your back 4 but I think Dolo will have to lose the spot to Spector if he is to get it.

Wynne's upside will see him surpass both Cherundolo and Spector.

Who knows, Spector may move inside as his career progresses.

Wynne doesn't know how to play soccer.

I would submit that, depending on our manager, we might not even be in a 4-man backline... we might opt to overload the midfield (depending on other personnel) and play with 3 in the back... if we are in a 4-man backline, it also depends on how the rest of the field shapes up... if we need the outside backs to overlap (like Cafu or Zambrotta), then i'd think a Wynne or Cherundolo would have a good shot at it... if we have a guy like Dempsey in front of the right back, we may want someone who just supports and doesn't get in his way (like Neville for ManUnited)... i think Spector would fit this mold...

That never stopped Frankie Hejduk.

Wynne is only good on the right. There, he can use his speed for offensive purposes to great effect. Spector could move to left or center. Spector has not shown anything special that would set him apart. Cherundolo has been solid, but like Spector, has no special attributes. So, Wynne it will be.

If a track star cannot cross the ball effectively and consistently he becomes the next worthless R back!

That never stopped Frankie Hejduk. But Hejduk couldn't play on either flank.

BTW, it's "SFS", not "SF".
