Yeah, they're a crock.... but they're a somewhat influential crock, vis a vis the Academy.

Where's Battlestar Galactica? Do these people not watch TV? And if so, do they not listen to critics???

Re: Movies:

I was glad to see someone (even if it is the HFP) agree with me that Thank You For Smoking is deserving of acclaim.

Bobby? Wow, they are cracked.

Leo getting 2 nods? Looks like Ryan Gosling will be left attending the IFC Awards for his statue this year.

Mark Wahlberg getting a nod for having about 15 lines.

No love for A Scanner Darkly in the Animated category?

At first I thought they hadn't screened Letters From Iwo Jima because of all the rave reviews it's getting, but then remembered GG has a foreign language category unlike the Academy which has a foreign film category.

Re: TV:

Big Love getting nods is good, but Paxton over Leary isn't right.

Go Weeds and ML Parker!

Alec Baldwin deservedly got his nomination and should crush. But Jason Lee, Zach Braff, Steve Carrell and Tony "How Does My Show Stay On The Air" Shaloub is good competition.

Or The Wire.

And nominating Letters from IJ and Apocalypto for best foreign language film is lame, lame, lame.

Or The Wire.

And nominating Letters from IJ and Apocalypto for best foreign language film is lame, lame, lame.Damn, I didn't even notice the Wire was missing too!

And even though I realize there's some genre bias going on here I was hoping that despite that the good reviews the show has consistently gotten over 3 years would have some impact on these awards shows...

Leonardo DiCaprio, Will Smith, Sacha Cohen, Will Ferrell...

We've come a long way since Marlon Brando.

does judi dench just automatically get nominated for an award? I mean, is it written in her contract? do people just nominate her out of habit? she could walk on screen and fart and some critic would nominate it.

Well, she is a tremendous actress. But as far as her performance in Notes on a Scandal ....eeeeeehuhhh ........ I think she brought a real note of warmth and humor to Casino Royale.

One thing about actress nods is that there seems to be an established hierarchy. Dench is near the top, as is Blanchett and Winslet. Theron will always get nominated. Naomi Watts is somehow insanely the victim of the system. SHe may be the only real rival to Blanchett's record over the past five or six years, but she's only been nominated maybe once (21 Grams). She's going to get robbed again this year, although not quite as badly as in the past.

Sacha Baron Cohen's statement on the Borat nomination:

“I am extremely honored. I’m very proud as well for my fellow writers as well as our director Larry Charles, and our producer Jay Roach, and am very thankful for the HFPA’s belief and acknowledgment of our film. I have been trying to let Borat know this great news but for the last 4 hours both of Kazakhstan’s telephones have been engaged. Eventually, Premier Nazarbayev answered and said he would pass on the message as soon as Borat returned from Iran, where he is guest of honor at the Holocaust Denial Conference.”

it's like offensive lineman in the pro bowl. you get in once, you're in for life.
and i'm not saying she's not talented, she just seems to be nominated every year, whether she deserves it or not.

Yep. But this won't be her year, I don't think. The reason is that this character is going to spark opposition with certain interest groups.

Charge!

Good to see both Baldwin and Carrell get noms. Baldwin just might be the greatest deliverer of the deadpan in television history.

Also, Entourage so doesn't deserve to get nominated. I'm a fan, but the show is junk TV, basically the male Sex and the City (which explains why it gets nominated).

OK, here's my little gripe about Dreamgirls and its Oscar campaign. If there's an intellectual shred running through Dreamgirls, it's about how horrible it is that in our appearance-driven society, the plump woman with talent gets pushed aside in favor of the gorgeous woman with half-talent. So what's happening in the Oscar campaign? The plump woman who gives the best performance is getting placed in the supporting Oscar race, while the beautiful starlet with little acting talent is getting pushed for the lead role EVEN THOUGH THE PLUMP WOMAN IS CLEARLY THE LEAD CHARACTER! Partly, that has to do with the fact that the supporting role is seen as the easy W, whereas the lead Oscar would be tough for a newcomer to win this year. Still, it looks TERRIBLE.
