----------------- Greaves
-------- Charlton
Finney - Robson - Edwards - Matthews
Pearce - Moore - Wright - Neville
------------- Banks

Depends on whether you want a functional XI or simply the best players. Pearce/Neville over Wilson/Armfield simply because the former duo are better defensively (imo) which gives Finney/Matthews the freedom to concentrate solely on attack.

Either Shilton or Banks would be fine in goal, both superb keepers.

Adams has no place in this team. Billy Wright and Sol Campbell both belong far ahead of him.

Bob Crompton is a good shout at RB, but is difficult to assess because he played so long ago. Jimmy Armfield would be the other obvious choice.

Cooper would be ahead of Pearce probably, and Ashley Cole has a strong claim already.

RW should obviously be Matthews and LW Tom Finney (though he could play anywhere in the forward line. Bobby Charlton started as a left winger so he would be another possible there.

CM should be either Robson or Edwards. Either would be fine.

Attacking midfield should be Charlton.

Up top Lineker and Greaves are the most obvious candidates, but might be a bit lightweight. If you wanted something different then Nat Lofthouse or Steve Bloomer would be good options.

Hapgood, Wilson and Byrne should be ahead of all of those.

The problem that you have is there is no target man for the two fantastic wingers. Greaves was England's best ever striker, but if you wanted to get the most out of that team then you really need a Lofthouse or a Lawton in there. Play Greaves just off the target man move Charlton back in to midfield with Robson missing out or drop Greaves out and use him off the bench.
Pearce is a long way off the best England left backs, and I also think Armfield would provide just as much defensive cover for Matthews as Neville would, but either is fine for me.
I would also prefer a better physical presence in central defence, so Franklin or Cambell should partner Moore.

…………………….Banks

Ramsey…...Francklin…….Moore…….Wilso n

……………………Edwards

……Matthews………………………Charlton R

..................Gascoigne

……………….Greaves……Lawton

Banks – best by far, followed by Swift and Clemence. I never liked Shilton, purely personal, but there ya go, it's my post so 'so there'...........

Ramsey – solid defender, good passer of the ball, followed by Jimmy Armfield and George Cohen.

Francklin – first England player to play abroad I believe, ruined his International career by move to Columbia, followed by Billy Wright – all other England centre backs were Donkeys.

Moore – Mr Composure – he would be captain.

Wilson – best left back we ever had, Cole A and Bridge show a lot of promise!

Edwards – what a waste, commanding midfielder who won the ball for his side and then distributed it superbly, followed by Johnny Haynes and Bryan Robson.

Matthews - the legendary Stan the 'wizard'!

Charlton – Bobby was the star of my youth and would grace any side.

Gascoigne - I hate the fat fcuker, but he was one of England's most creative players ever!

Greaves – Jimmy was the best poacher of all time for England, when he wasn’t on the booze – followed by Lineker and Finney.

Lawton – powerful centre forward, who Greavsie would have fed off – followed by Stan Mortenson and Alan Shearer.

Just an old man's opinion boys..................(& girls)............:)

I would love Gerrard to be in that list but I think he needs to achieve something with England. I think Ashley Cole when he retires might be better Psycho. I was debating to put Gary Neville but I just don't like him. I heard Greaves was just too good but I really never seen him so. Wazza who? I think Rooooh can decided his own destiny. I know ppl will ask why Scholes, Ince and Barnes are on the list. This is my list.

Can't go with any of the greats like Banks, Matthews, Charlton, Moore and Greaves because I didn't see them play. I mean I've seen the clips just like everyone else, but that's not enough for me to make a decision. Plus like someone said it's hard to know how they'd compare with modern players.

So I'm gonna have to go with:

…………………….Shilton

Neville…...Butcher…….Campbell…….Pearce

……………………Ince

……Gascoigne………………………Waddle

..................Scholes

……………….Shearer……Lineker
