"Joey is a leader with great character. You need forthright people like that, on and off the field," said McClaren.
he would be a step up from carrick .But can he be trusted to behave and not do something stupid?

He's a different type of player but one that deserves a chance to impress.

he is in the "little terrier players who continually get in trouble with the authorities" club with lee bowyer .
he is the type of player who will get sent off on debut.

I don't think he would. I think he knows England calls come very rarely and will not want to mess it up.

He's definately gonna have to watch his mouth, but give him a shot I say. If players like Jenas, Richardson, and P. Neville can get recent call ups, then surely one of them can lose their place for Barton..

Barton may have ruffled a few feathers in the England camp with his recent comments about the spate of books which emerged after the World Cup.
Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand, Frank Lampard, Ashley Cole and Steven Gerrard all produced books after the tournament.
"I can't get my head around that," said Barton.
"England did nothing in that World Cup, so why were they bringing out books? If I'm buying a book I'll buy a book about someone who's won something.
"I might be off the mark, but (the England World Cup team) seemed to be a bunch of individuals playing for themselves and not wanting to do the nasty things involved in being a team."
I like this guy. If Jenas makes the squad all the time. Why not him. But I think Kevin Nolan deserves a chance first.

There seems to have been a proliferation of rough around the edges, shoot on sight English midfielders in recent times, problem being that anymore than one in the side can prove detrimental to the team's dynamic - I cant see how Gerrard, Lampard and Barton could ever fit in the same side.
The way he is playing means he deserves a chance, even if he is a prick

Another headless chicken like Parker. Good in the Prem but I can't see that type of player ever troubling the top international sides.

barton is a classical chav.
he has a low form of cunning which is mistaken for intelligence.
but at least he might actually produce some work rate in the midfield.
carrick and company dont even wanna break sweat .

We should give Kevin bloody Nolan a chance! He's just like the poor mans Stevie G, and maybe playing in the England side would help him improve more.

Sounds just what we need...
England need a player who can dictate the tempo of the game from deeper positions. Carrick is neat but as yet uninfluential at Internatioanl level - hopefully Huddlestone will build on his potential and make the step up although he ll need a warrior alongside him.

Nolan deserves more of a chance than Barton. He captains a far more tactically sophisticated team, which will be more useful at international level.

Fanciful Purist.
Imagine an England midfield of Nolan, Barton and Parker - oh one can only dream...

Perhaps you should try using him correctly before passing comment or casting him aside.

He deserves to play alongside a worker/ watercarrier like Hargreaves at some point, although that would seem very unlikely with Rooney, Lampard and Gerrad all being squeezed into the team, when arguably, only one of them should play.
Carrick is a good player, but Tom Huddlestone has the potential to be considerably better - an ability to pick out and exectue a pass that is primed for International football. But again he looks like he ll need protection like Carrick

that was seen in the ecuador game in the world cup .He didnt look good then either .
He has no pace and zero work rate .
the team cant afford to carry a player like him .
tottenham were laughing all the way to the bank when they got 18 million for him.

Pretty sure he played behind Gerrard and Lampard. Not ideal conditions for him to flourish but he did ok in that match, but it wasnt the masterclass of a performance that Hansen would have had you believe.
But I tend to agree, his range of passing is good, if often slack, but not good enough to warrant such a place in the side. I wouldnt say his work rate is that bad, but physically he is neither stong nor quick.
The fee was 14 million rising to 18 if they win the league - if they manage that I guess he ll have been worth it.
Either way, it was great business for Spurs
