NaS has a new single with the subtle title "Hip Hop is Dead."
Do you think the blasphemous rhymes of today have killed Hip Hop? And created a new genre or has it just revived Hip Hop into a different sort?
Discuss.

You would figure NAS would know... but maybe he's got his head in the sand after lending his hard-earned street cred to far too many flash in the pan acts.
Hip Hop is perfectly alive as long as you don't turn to the radio or TV as your sources for it. The underground and grassroots of hip hop are alive, well, and better than ever as far as I'm concerned.

Agreed, and hip hop is making quality inroads internationally as well.
But he is right in one aspect; some djs should be seriously shot. :o

Agreed, but the radio and TV is how most Americans (white suburban kids) get their hip-hop. In that sense it is dead by not dominating the media unlike the 90's.

Is "international Hip-Hop" still hip-hop or does it become something new and different altogether?

Its still hip-hop IMO. Must say though that Asian rap is crap for the most part. But I like some stuff coming out of England especially.

Nas only has one good album. Granted it's one of the best hip hop albums of all time but he still has pretty much put out shit albums his whole career.
That being said true Hip Hop is certainly not dead.

I assume you've only heard Illmatic. It was Written and Stillmatic are 2 fine albums. Hell, even the Lost Tapes was great, and that wasn't even an album.

God's Son was pretty good I felt too. But the ones between Ill and Stillmatic were just horrible

Only when you compare them to his first LP. And he's put out a lot of outstanding singles. Even his crummy songs have great wordplay. He's still one of most vital MC's around.
I've heard the new LP and it's good, but the new Ghostface (More Fish) is better.

Ohh he's put out a few good songs here and there. But the albums as a whole aren't that good.
That's the case with Stillmatic and It was Written imo. It's hard not to compare them to Ill. That album was so good.
The new Ghostface record is awesome.

I'm totally ignorant when it comes to hip-hop/rap but I do enjoy some French rap (MC Solaar, Booba) and some of the American originators (NWA, PE) but I can't stand whats going on in today's mainstream. My friend had told me of this underground rapper (Immortal Technique) who is supposed to be a throwback to what rap started as and one of the best out there nowadays.
I've heard some Romanian rap as well and its freaking laughable.

More Fish is quality. Better than Fishscale, and I loved that album.

If you're a hip-hop fan and not listening to these 2 weekly shows, you should be:
Coffee Break For Heroes & Villains with Noah (http://www.wfmu.org/playlists/NU)
Put the Needle On the Record with Billy Jam (http://www.wfmu.org/playlists/BJ)

Agreed on both counts. IMO Hell Hath no Fury is just behind Fishscale and just ahead of Game Theory for album of the year.

I finally got around to buying Hip Hop is Dead and I'm listening to it now. It's really good. I especially like the title track played over the Inagaddadavida sample.

That's "Hip Hop Is Dead". I like the track, especially the Mike Jones-mocking repetition of the "hitting Brazilian dimes from behind" line, but what bugs me is that the Incredible Bongo Band Innagaddavida sample is the same one he used on Thief's Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z0dc91Nzewc) (and he uses the same IBB "Apache" sample he used on "Made You Look"). But you kinda expect that when you get the guy from Black Eyed Peas to produce.
Also, the best hip hop album people aren't listening to: "Pick A Bigger Weapon" by the Coup.
