just watching the highlihgts again, I am positive that if we would have an Hugo right now, he wouldnt have to be double and triple teamed because we have a better cast. Still amazing how he was able to find the open guy

Well interesting to see how some people viewed past games compared to one’s own view of them. Talking specifically about the road to 98 and actual tournament episode.
Some of their philosophies make sense, but other don’t. A particular one I never liked is the commonly repeated (this time by Trelles or was it the white haired glasses guy) “Our players are too short and frail compared to the Europeans” . For the past 5 WC I don’t recall a game where the players were ever mopped off the field because of the incredible strength or stamina of the European opposition. In friendlies is another thing but not in Wcs. I also can’t recall a game in where lack of height was the downfall of the team when a well placed header by a much taller opponent sealed the team’s fate, in WCs or even in friendlies (except perhaps that friendly they played in San Francisco against Iceland where some tall forward leaped over the entire defense, but that’s about it).
Its been proven time after time that at the international level of play, a player who reaches that level with height disadvantage and all has long ago come up with way to cover for it.
Though it may be a matter of perception in the end. What is tall in one part of the world is just medium sized in another. So perhaps when commentators, journalist and coaches bring up the factor of the team needing some height in the backline, the’re not necessarily asking for Hyppias or Ferdinands, just someone who’s not a whole foot shorter than the opposing forwards.
Also interesting to hear the different theories of what was the downfall of the Germany game in 98. The Basaguren theory that taking Palencia out made Mexico lose its dynamics is new look at things. Though I have to say Palencia did look very tired by the end and the team did need to make a substitution.

Montpelier, June, 1998
Oliver Bierhoff scores - Germany 2-1.
Also, the entire Norway match in 1994 was decided in the air. The goalkeeper kicked the ball up to Jostein Flo who would flick it on to other norwegians because he was at least 8 inches taller than the Mexican defense. Their height advantage was such a problem that Zague had to play much more defensively because he was the only player with any modicum of hieght.

In The Norway game Mexico had its chances, but nobody could be bothered to convert them especially Zague. The Norwegians did win most of the aerial battles but not the point it was more a factor than total disorganization in the back for Norway's first goal.
The Bierhoff over Lara thing is a bit controversial. Everybody was tired as hell from the heat of high 80s low 90s despite it being the conditions the Mexican team was used to playing in on a weekly basis in the MFL. Lara had to take what was given to him. Lara didn't ask to be played in the defense, LaPuente decided to shake it up and put him in Claudio's place and vice versa. Lara did the best he could but in the end a world-class striker like Bierhoff many times managed to get the best of world-class defenders so an average skilled defender was probably going to suffer the same misfortune given the situation.

Perhaps but it seems that if anything the taller (somewhat stronger) defenders have given us more headaches or uncomfortablness in the recent past than peace of mind. With the exception of Rafa and Claudio (on the 6'0" or taller scale) there haven't been any quality tall defenders to don the green shirt too many times. De Anda, Vidrio (first time around), Macias (validly accept this guy was tall but with the body of a 10 year girl :) ) and of course last WC's tall defender who need no introduction ;).
The percentage of people in Mexico and Latin America over 6'0" is not very high but the media pundits that keeps clamouring for taller defenders because there's this untapped resource seems to be forgetting that. The percentage is small of population taller than 6'0", than find someone from that group that likes soccer instead of another sport is smaller and than an even smaller percentage is of those few who can actually turn into quality professional players in the future .

I found the disrtibutor of the series in US for ESPN Deportes.

Yes, they had on on Cardozo. Which was really good, btw. The other one they had was about the best foreigners to play in Mexico. I watched most of it, until my dad changed the channel.
It sucks that the Dish programming doesn't help a lot. Since sometimes you never even know when they're showing them, unless you put it in the ESPN deportes channel.
