out of curiosity, what cities have people found to be terrible?
for me:
US: Columbus-terrible suburban wasteland with lots of churches parking lots and strip malls and that is about it. Nobody even lives in the city itself and the borders of the "city" are equivalent to calling Framingham Boston. If we had stayed longer, we might have died of boredom.
Europe: Napoli-dirty and disgusting with possibly the highest percentage of stray dogs in the world. No intentions of going back there the next time I go to Italy.

When I saw this thread I automatically thought of Columbus. Glad to know I'm not alone.
Cities are suppose to be fun and Columbus is the exact opposite of what a city is suppose to be.

Columbus and Houston would have to top my list. Ed, if you think CBus has strip malls, never go to Houston. The entire f'in city is just a huge strip mall. And other than that, their sports teams suck.
Internationally ... surprisingly Milan. Nothing really wrong with it, but it's just an extremely industrialized city. I was disappointed.

I had similar feelings about Dallas but since I did not actually go to the city I did not think it was fair to put it down...just seemed to be spread out strip malls

Frisco and Plano have some very nice people and a very lovely soccer stadium but holy crap is that place a strip mall chain store nightmare.
There is absolutely no reason whatsoever to visit Myrtle Beach, SC, unless you are looking to purchase fireworks, or possibly because you are 17 and want to get drunk.
The entire story of what I was doing in Lancaster, CA is very long (Ed's heard it) and involves being stuck in a motel where Toole and I were pretty sure we saw Nicholas Cage wheeling a shopping cart full of liquor into one of the rooms.
Worst international city: Trieste, Italy: "Oh, look, beautiful Adriatic coastline and a giant concrete slab anthill from the Mussolini days right in the middle of everything."

Antalya, Turkey.
1.) I felt less afraid lost at night in Bahrain during august with everyone outside their house (actually chatted with a bunch of friendly locals in Bahrain and felt safe after that).
2.) The beggars and scam artists are very proactive. If they see leather, they will dive to blob your shoes with conditioner. If you don't pay them to polish both shoes, it will either a.) ruin one of your shoes or b.) look really silly if you polish just one of the shoes yourself.
3.) The bus trip from the pier passed by about what looked like hundreds of new construction condos. I thought that the area was on the rise until someone said they looked like that the last time he was there which was 1993.
4.) The "resort" area of town isn't that bad san little girl beggars and scam artists. However, a cab driver used an alternate route that took us to areas that had statues of giant swords and murals of america burning.
5.) Someone on my ship got two years in jail for pissing on the base of an ataturk statue while drunk. Granted, we were warned a million times and he was an idiot, but 2 years?
6.) There are money exchanges every other block to accomodate everyone changing their money into USD or euros because their inflation rate is around 80%.
7.) Efes beer has contract in the resort community so it's nearly the only beer in town. To say they drastically overdue the formaldehyde is a gross understatement.
That's just off the top of my head, but there were other things.
Oh yeah, it also stunk.

Denver's a lot like Columbus, Salt Lake, etc ... "big" cities, where no one lives in the city. Everyone lives outside, so at night the entire city is seemingly dead.
But the location is really nice, the people are friendly, the bars are, the microbreweries are great ... I like Denver.
One of my favorite cities in America. Boston, San Diego and Denver, probably in that order. San Fran, Miami and New Orleans (the last two more for fun times) are also great cities to visit.

Trieste's not a city, it's a shopping mall. I had no idea there was city associated with it for years, I thought it was just place with lots of stores where we'd go buy 5 pairs of jeans and smuggle them back over border (wearing all 5 in summer :D)

Juarez, Mexico
Daytona Beach, FL - ick!
I was trying to think of a city in North or South Carolina, I disliked, and as I child I used to just hate crossing the border in SC because I thought it was gross, THAT was until I met Indiana.
Myrtle Beach, SC is shady like UP says unless you just graduated from high school, and are there for the week, with your Southern Baptist H.S. friends that don't drink, Sur-Mix-Alot blasting on the stereo, and you have a fifth of Everclear (to yourself)...ah what memories. :D

After you posted El Paso, TX I knew this couldn't be far behind.:D
I lived in El Paso,(Fort Bliss actually) from 79-81 and I liked it, if only because the desert was close enough to ride my bike to at the time, and catch what we called Horny Toads. Of Course I was 8.

I would like to add.
Sioux Falls, SD it smells like rotting cattle meets bird feed.
Augusta, GA for the very same reason.

We drove through it on our way back to Germany after driving to Croatia to get pizza. That was quite enough.

I had a great time in Trieste.
Well, for the three hours anything was open the day after Easter!

I've spent a few days in Houston, and about 90% of this city are 4 lane roads lined with strip malls, which intersect with other 4 lane roads lined with strip malls. For the 4th largest city in this country, it's a real shame.

This list is easier for me to create:
Columbus, OH
Rochester, NY (people are nice, city looked like crap)
New York, NY (I hate just about the entire state, and this city in particular.)
Washington DC (I have zero desire to return. Died after dark.)
Orlando, FL (Also died after dark.)
Pittsburgh, PA (I've never been there but I hate so much about it anyway.)
