obviously there is no greatest ever player, it always gives me a bit of a laugh as this subject gets a mention on all the forums.

i find that most people tend to choose someone from their particular time, especially when they were growing up.

i always wonder what is the criteria you have to meet to be the world's greatest player?
more often than not its a striker.

i believe that any really good player can look like he's the ONE, when a tv show decides to feature him and to back up that belief.

you see it all the time. the player has to be in slow-motion of course, preferably doing the required amount of stepovers too. if he's like man utd's ronaldo, that means one hundred or so every time he gets the ball.

obviously the music has to be just right too.
also, playing the same vision over and over again helps too, that really can shove the idea down peoples throats.
helps if they're good-looking too.

doesn't work for goalies though!

that all for a tv audience of course, seeing players live give a better indication who is the very best.

seriously tho', what is the criteria for most people?
do they have to be a bit of an all-rounder, and be able to play in more than one position for instance?

maybe be from a successful club for most of their career?

Agree with most of it. Who's to say that a striker or playmaker is more important than a CB? If you say scoring goals wins games, doesn't preventing them also?

As Seedorf said, (he actually sounds like a pretty thoughtful guy from his interviews) to decide best player, we have to do it by position.

Another response to the Zidane fan - Zidane is arguably not the best player to play in the CAM position, then how can he be the greatest? The best CAM, I would probably pick Maradona, as forwards, I would probably pick Ronaldo and Pele (inside forward), those are arguably the greatest to play their position.

Although, I must say, we would have gladly had either Zidane or Maradona against Brazil.

An interesting topic indeed.

Without a doubt in MY mind, and once again, this is all based on opinions, right? The greatest footballer of all time is Zidane. My reasons are simple, and I guess I'll list them below.

1. He holds a personal spot in my heart. Zinedine Zidane is THE REASON I love this sport so much. I have been a soccer/football fanatic for over a year now, with last year's world cup sparking my interest in the sport (and, yes, I'm American.) Zidane's play mesmerized me. I loved his style, his leadership ability, etc.

2. He was always in control of the match. No matter what you thought, the opposing team thought, or the refs thought, Zidane was always in control. No matter what. And if things started to slip, the team immediately went on his back, and he made things right again.

3. In a little year called 1998, in a little tournament known as the Fifa World Cup, Zidane singlehandedly slayed the Brazilian National team for 90 minutes in a Paris suburb.

I believe that if we all give this another 10 years, Zidane is easily a top 5 greatest players of all time candidate. Maybe not now, because he has only been in retirement for one year now, but with time, the names Pele, Maradona, Cruyff, Zidane and Beckenbauer will all be spoken in the same breath. Count on it.

Singlehandedly beat brazil? Well he scored two goals from corners supplied by petit, who added a third one himself.

not to mention, the French probably poisoned the best player of the tournament the night before the WC final. Poison the best player in the world, beat them, and then claim Zidane is the greatest....OK

In all seriousness, 3. In a little year called 1998, in a little tournament known as the Fifa World Cup, Zidane singlehandedly slayed the Brazilian National team for 90 minutes in a Paris suburb.A much more accurate interpretation would be: an epileptic fit of unknown cause slayed Brazil and Aimé Jacquet executed a perfect plan for set pieces in which he gave Zidane, a man who was invisible in the quarters and semis after missing two games due to suspension, the privilege of being the one chosen to knock the ball into the net.

Yes, I'm convinced it was a conspiracy.

The best player of the tournament coming down with an epileptic fit (that's not confirmed I believe) night before the final...against the home team.

Yes, I'm convinced it was a conspiracy.

The best player of the tournament coming down with an epileptic fit (that's not confirmed I believe) night before the final...against the home team. And that's enough to convince you of a conspiracy?

Let me tell you who it doesn't convince:

Ronaldo, Dunga, Zico, Zagallo, Roberto Carlos, Cafu... etc.

And it's plenty confirmed. Suggesting it's not just indicates how little attention it was given after the final was over and people moved on.

Ronaldo was sick that night as confirmed by Zico, they didn't even wanna play him at the time but Ronaldo insisted. He was unconsious and was in no way or shape 100%. Conspiracy i believe.

Conspiracy i believe. You've just explained that he was sick. A perfectly simple, natural explanation.

But you want to add "conspiracy" to it? Why are people so attracted to such nonsense???

He had an epileptic fit. Roberto Carlos and others witnessed it. It may or may not have been brought on by the shots he was taking for his knee injuries at the time.

That's it.

It sucks.

But that's all it was.

That killed off an already ridculous post before it even got started.

The ultimate footballer has an ugly bald spot, and does the Marseille Roulettes like there's no tomorrow.

Zidane is probably not the best player ever to play the CAM position, but he is THE most mesmerizing to watch...you just can't help but shudder at the grace and the coolness....
