I have a viewSonic VA1912wb monitor that was purchased less than a year ago. I have absolutely no sound whatsoever and have come to found out that buzzing noise that was continuous and would not end until the monitor was shut off were the internal speakers imploding.
Now, I have a bigger problem, I cannot find the receipt nor warranty that I purchased. So now how do I get this fixed?
I tried to put external speakers connected to the monitor and to the computer itself and cannot get a single sound, what gives? Surely the internal monitor speakers don't control the entire sound for the system?

whatever you do DO NOT OPEN THE MONITOR!!!!! it can carry thousands of volts even after weeks of being shut off. it can cause serious injury and even death. if you cant find out whats wrong pay a professional or just buy a new one. its never worth your live just to try and save a couple of bucks

oh, thanks for the tip, I have not opened it (as you are aware as I sit here typing ;) ), but good to know.
Is this something geeksquad could work on w/o paying the same I paid for the monitor?

I would simply get external speakers - even fairly cheap ones should sound better than the ones built into the monitor. And as long as everything is hooked up right, the monitor should not effect the sound coming from the external speakers. Hook up the speakers directly to the computer, and disconnect whatever audio lines connect the computer to the monitor.

spejic, I did that, I originally thought the prob was w/ the ext. speakers and hooked up 2 other ones (directly to the comp) to no avail. The only connection between the monitor and the cop is the video wire for the monitor.
I don't even understand why there was no sound coming even if the speakers were directly connected to the monitor.

In that case, it's probably a setting someplace in the Control Panel that lets you switch where the sound chip is sending its output. I can't say where because I am not familiar with drivers that Viewsonic monitors use, but with a little hunting I'm sure there is a way to get your computer making noise again.

Is this really true?

The only connection between the monitor and the cop is the video wire for the monitor.
 Then it's little wonder you aren't getting any sound - that cable only carries video. There is a second wire that should connect a little round socket on the monitor to a little round (usually green) socket on the computer.
Ensure that your software settings have the sound on, and directed to the speaker port.
Sorry if this seems condescending, but your problem description doesn't make any sense.
I don't even understand why there was no sound coming even if the speakers were directly connected to the monitor.
Because the speakers don't connect to the monitor - they connect to the computer. You need to use the cable that came with your monitor to connect that port to the computer, and you should get sound out of your monitor speakers.
Is this really true?
Not for an LCD monitor. You want to try a CRT monitor out and test for yourself (suggestion: don't do it).

That's what was connected before. I left out that only now do I have just the vid wire plugged.
So, I went to try everything out again.
I have the green connection from the monitor to the computer, line in on the computer since the socket is also green.
Then, where do I connect the external speakers? Those also have a green end.
I have line in and line out on my comp and I tried to switch the monitor to line in (I think it was blue) and the ext. speakers to lineout which did not work either. I also went to cont. panel and made sure the output would be to external speakers.
sheesh, I need all the help I can get.

First, try ONE thing at a time. You are trying too much.
I have the green connection from the monitor to the computer, line in on the computer since the socket is also green.
Line OUT (or SPKR) on the computer to the socket on the monitor.
Then, where do I connect the external speakers? Those also have a green end.
If you are using the monitor speakers, you don't connect the external speakers. If you wish to use those instead, they also go to the same "Line Out" port that the monitor uses.
I also went to cont. panel and made sure the output would be to external speakers.
First, go into control panel, make sure you are looking at the "Classic" view, and open up "Sounds and Audio Devices". From there, click on the hardware tab and select every item listed one at a time and ensure it says "This device is working properly." down below. If you have no problems there, go to the Audio tab, and ensure your soundcard is chosen in the "sound playback" pulldown list. Click on "Volume", and up will pop a volume control. Make sure everything is not muted, and adjust the volumes upwards until you hear something. Make sure that if your speakers are powered they are turned on and up, and if the monitor has any volume controls make sure they are turned up. As you adjust the master volume, you should hear a "ding" at various volumes.
This all assumes you are using Windows, of course.

Foo, thanks for helping me out.
we can forget about the monitor's internal speakers because those don't work for sure.
Everything through cont. panel is affirmative.
I tried to plug the ext speakers through the line out on the comp and am getting nothing. I plugged my ipod into the speakers and the speakers work. I have every volume available blasting... w/o a sound...

I don't know what else to suggest. Are you positive that you are hooked to the right port on the computer?
Have you tried hooking the monitor speakers to the iPod?

oh my word... I just plugged my ipod into it...and... my internal monitor speakers do work.
Now I am even more confused!!
I've hooked everything correctly w/the wires.
Actually, everything was working fine before until all of a sudden the sound stopped working and I had used the ext speakers beforehand.
what the heck is missing between the mon/speakers/comp. I can't wrap my head around this.

could something be wrong w/ the line out socket on my comp? could it have burned out/gotten fried?

iPod + internal monitor speakers = sound
iPod + extenal speakers = ?????
If possible, i'd try the iPod with the external speakers. Based on what you're saying, it COULD be the line out, but iPod+external speakers would help triangulate.

yeah, I mentioned earlier that the ipod w/ the external did work.
Also, a few months ago when this started, I tried a few different speakers which did not work.
i made sure the settings on the monitor were ok and the settings through the cont. panel. heck, my only option was to choose the sound card, furthermore, I tried to have the audi got through the sound settings through "external speakers" and "internal monitor speakers" (not the exact terms) but neither worked.

It could be a bad port. They undergo physical stress which might jar loose a not correctly connected lead, or they could have undergone a shock at some time in the past which fried something in there.
You can get a sound card and plug it into a PCI slot. Simple ones are very cheap.

I was on live chat w/ emachnes for the past 1 hr at least and they directly connected to my comp... diagnosis...
Bad port!
This ENTIRE time I thought it was my monitor. So, I am to get a new sound card. Anyone have recommendations for something that is not more than say $40 but is good for gaming such as call of duty/medal of honor
i was recommended Turtle Beach Riviera 5.1 sound card but i can only find it online and at the moment I'd like one I could pick up today (in the next 40mins or tomorrow).
i have emachines T1860. I've upgraded the video card a couple pf times among other hardwares for it for gaming over the years.
