Here's a german language version that has a few interesting quotes:
http://www.spiegel.de/sport/fussball/0,1518,450445,00.html

The police union 'Alliance' spoke today of 'legitimate self defence'
'The shot was made out of desperation' disclosed the union. 'He was charged by 150 agitated guys, and if he hadn't shot, he'd have snuffed it'. Union boss Frédéric Lagache said, the plain clothes officer 'feared for his life'.
(my translation)

Apparently, the incident was racial as the policeman was Black.... the fan is probably Jewish.

The link to the story in french : http://www.lequipe.fr/Football/20061124_001402Dev.html

In summary :

A policeman in civilian clothes was trying to protect a french jewish fan of Tel Aviv who had been agressed by some PSG "fans". Since more and more of these fans had gathered and were agressive, throwing racist insults, he used his gas first and then took out his gun (the fans hadd'nt noticed the guy is a policeman) and shot since he was assulted. The policeman and the Tel Aviv fan hide in a McDonalds near by waiting for help while the PSG fans try to break the windows. They only notice at this moment the guy is a cop because he brings out his walkie-talkie.

PSG has a bunch of fans who are actually hooligans and nothing else. Dangerous ones. The classic extreme-right racists.

This was bound to happen one day. The PSG hooligans have a long list of these types of incidents.

Police never uses guns in France. A couple of years ago, the same group of PSG hooligans agressed a CRS police man (Riot Police) in the "Parc des Princes" stadium, a couple of them kicked him in the head leaving him unconcious. The other CRS did'nt go fore their guns to shoot.

So my guess is this guy really felt his life was in danger.

Personnaly i won't miss that brain dead hooligan at all. He got what he deserved.

I say we better talk about the player saving a penalty in the 90th minute. This is definetly not the beautiful game, although I am aware incidents like this are inextricably connected to football, unfortunately.
