"The trial has come as a surprise, not only because Adu has performed relatively poorly in Major League Soccer (MLS) this season for DC United, but also because Chelsea all but finalised a £5 million deal to sign him in February."

Sometimes these articles are nice for a laugh.:p

More fun ...

What is clear is that Chelsea’s interest has cooled in view of the 17-year-old’s struggle to live up to his promise ...

I'm picturing Jose Mourinho: "What? He learned to play some defense and improved by leaps and bounds? Nah, we don't want him now."

More realistically, here's Jose: "Who? Oh, that kid who played against us for United? OK, sure -- hey, have we bought Ronaldinho yet?"

e is unlikely to be indulged as the star he has been from the moment he made his MLS debut at 14. Although his whereabouts yesterday were not known, United had been leaning towards the idea of him staying in digs with other young players rather than in a top hotel, as he might have expected.

Should we tell Mr. Kay this kid lives with his mom, and that his team high-tailed it back to Washington after a night game in New Jersey? He's Freddy Adu, not Jennifer Lopez.

Geez, I'd love to be a journalist in England. If you're worried about being late to the pub, just make something up and publish.

I didn't realize Nowak was one of Freddy's most "ardent admirers"

Journalist? England? Do those two words belong in the same sentence?
