In the spirit of TheSlipperyOne's thread titles. :)

Is anyone watching Day Break, which debuted this week in the "Lost" slot while Lost is on vacation until February?

A brief description: similar in concept to the movie "Groundhog Day," and L.A. cop wakes up to find that he is being framed for the murder of an assistant DA. At the end of the day, he is threatened by a shadowy conspiracy, but then he wakes up the next day to find that he hasn't been arrested yet and he can change his actions to try to find out who actually committed the murder and framed him.

So far in the two hour premiere, we have seen him go through his day three and a half times -- the first time he got arrested, the second time he tried to hide the evidence which was planted in his apartment, but his partner turned on him and he got arrested, and the third time he tried to get away with his girlfriend, got shot in the shoulder, and woke up again with his shoulder bleeding from the gunshot.

I like it so far. It has a good sense of impending doom for the hero and good action. The acting is good -- the lead, Taye Diggs, is excellent and none of the supporting cast suck so far -- and it has Adam Baldwin, who played Jayne in "Firefly", as his creepy former partner who appears to be in on the conspiracy.

It's on in the Lost slot for the next few months, Wednesdays at 9 on ABC. I think it will actually wrap up this guy's day in the 13 episodes, because how many times can the guy go through this very bad day and keep the viewers interested? (Maybe he'll have another bad day for next season. I mean, Jack Bauer keeps finding himself in the middle of a 24-hour conspiracy time after time...)

I wonder in which episode he'll try and learn how to play piano and charm a lovely producer?

i watched it and didn't think it was bad at all. the premise gives the writers a good chance to add a lot of little things that you only notice upon second viewing. i do like the caveat that everything that's happened to him physically/mentally carries over into the next day, as opposed to bill murray killing himself over and over again and waking up w/out a scratch.

Nobody else watching this? I think it's great. Now I just hope it actually gets to run all 13 episodes -- I hear the ratings aren't that great -- if it gets cancelled halfway through, I'll be very upset. Like how Goodsport still bemoans the cancellation of "Nowhere Man" by UPN back in 1995.

So anyways, I just watched the third episode last night. First off, the "day X" titles are confusing -- the third episode started off with "day 2" but the previous episode had "day 1" and "day 2" and I don't think the two "day 2s" were the same day. Then again, maybe I'm not paying enough attention.

It was very satisfying when he shot the guys who had been tailing him outside his sister's house. He knows they'll be back the next day, but it's a good way to get his aggression out.

I was worried that they seemed to be introducing a new character and subplot with no real connection to the previous days, but they managed to tie it in very nicely when he was able to identify the picture that was sent to Hopper's sister. It was strange to see them drop some of the characters though -- he didn't even try to save the lady from the bus crash, the two cops (one of them the guy from the X-files) weren't in this episode at all. Neither was his gang-related informant guy.

Hopper's current to-do list:
1. Change cell phone battery.
2. Remove GPS device from car.
3. Get package (hourglass) from home.
4. Get package (picture) from sister's home.
5. Save lady from bus crash.
6. Help partner get drug-addicted boyfriend into rehab.
7. (optional) Kick brother-in-law's ass for beating his wife.
8. Save girlfriend from getting shot by goons.
9. Make bet on Dodger game.
...

Good stuff.

i like it too... and will be quite pissed off if i don't find out how he gets through the day.

yeah, this brought a smile to my face too. i know i'd have done the exact same thing.

they've thrown two ripples in the "every day the same thing happens" routine. 1. what physically happens to him carries over; and 2. it seems he can influence a mentality shift in others (his partner woke up and "felt" different). speaking of his partner, i'm still trying to figure out if i think she's really hot, or just has a great body and is attractive. rita, on the other hand, is nails. she alone is worth watching the show. her real name is quite strange though... mabye the strangest i've ever heard - moon bloodgood.

Agreed on the girlfriend being exceptionally hot. She's very exotic, I wonder if her dad was a GI? ;)

Just looked it up -- wikipedia says she is of Dutch, Irish, Korean and Native American descent. Wow.

they addressed this. remember when he talked to rita about trying to help this person, but if he helped her, he wouldn't have time to figure out the larger picture... and she responded by saying that he should spend the time getting to the bottom of the larger thing. i think he was talking about not having time to save rita everyday, but it would go for the bus crash victim as well.

i'm really looking forward to the final day when he gets everything right. you know, it's really kinda like a video game.

Yeah, but what if this is the day he gets the big picture right -- does the bus crash victim stay injured? Or does he have to go back and do it again, and figure out how to save the bus crash victim in addition to getting everything else right?

I like how he has now "fixed" the issue with the partner (which you mentioned before we got sidetracked by how hot Moon Bloodgood is) -- as he goes on, he can hopefully "fix" some more of the smaller issues and not have to deal with them while he still goes after the big picture. But now is his partner going to call him every morning to say, hey, I've been seeing Eddie and he's back on drugs -- after a few days that will get old. "Yeah yeah, whatever, just take him to rehab, I got better things to do." :D

Yeah, I've seen it described as similar to the "Babel Fish hunt" from the old text-based "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" game -- does anyone else remember that?

Yes, you got to wake up, open your eyes, get up on a certain side of the bed put your robe on, then take the analgesic....:)

'Animal Mother' (Baldwin) looks like he just got off the set off Full Metal Jacket. He looked more matured when he was on Firefly.

So in the end the crazy guy bites Hooper because?

Good show I'm dreading the idea that that show could go on for more then one season.

I hated Ground hog day by the way.

I like it too but I'm with you regarding the way the will end the season. I really hope they do not go the way of Lost and the way that's been dragging. More like 24, finish 1 day and on to the next.

Actually, "Nowhere Man" was cancelled by UPN back in 1996 (the show ran for the full 1995-96 TV season). ;) ... :(

It's too bad that I was too busy to watch Day Break from the beginning, and now it's too late for me to jump in and start watching it in the middle of the season. :(

which, i would imagine, is the biggest problem with this show. i know a couple people tell me that they would start watching it, but they're not going to because they missed all the earlier ones.

So, the bad news: Day Break pulled off of ABC's schedule effective immediately. (http://www.thefutoncritic.com/news.aspx?id=7251) Suck, but not surprising based on the ratings. The remaining episodes should be available on ABC's web site over the next few weeks. I guess we'll be watching the rest in a little computer window. :(

I liked the most recent episode, especially when he found the bad guy (Jonathan Banks, aka Frank McPike from "Wiseguy") and punched him in the face the first day, and then the quick three day montage where he tried different methods to work with the guy.

Jeez... I can't watch it since I'm up the border and ABC.com won't let me see the shows on the Internet.

Is there a solution? I knew I should have stopped watching after the first ratings where out.

Hopefully some enterprising soul will be able to turn the ABC.com streaming video into torrents that can be downloaded. If not, hopefully there will be a DVD release which you can rent in six months or so...

looking less and less likely that we'll get to see any of the unaired episodes online. look here: http://featuresblogs.chicagotribune.com/entertainment_tv/2006/12/day_break_downe.html

abc had better come through and put those online or i'm really going to be pissed.
