View Full Version : Good news for the traditionalists - the Intercontinental Cup is back!

Or is it?
According to a newspiece in www.marca.es, the Intercontinental Cup is to be revived; the event is set for January in Spain. It will pit Sevilla vs. Boca Juniors.
But I suggest the Spaniards check their facts. While it correctly highlights Sevilla as the reigning SuperCup titlist, it wrongly lists Boca as the reigning Libertadores winners. Boca's last continental win was in 2003.
Can anyone provide further info on this?

This is just a friendly match in my opinion. There is nothing official about this, and the Intercontinental Cup was always between the winners of the most important Cups in Europe and South America, so Barcelona and Internacional this year (which most likely will meet in the final of the CWC in Japan in December).

And more importantly, has nothing to do with FIFA. Moved.
So now it's supposed to be January? This article (http://home.skysports.com/list.aspx?hlid=423069&CPID=23&clid=179&lid=&title=Boca-Sevilla+clash+gets+go-ahead) mentions December. All in all it's just a lame attempt by Boca to accumulate more international titles (like when they tried to play old Interamerican Cup finals.) Even if Sevilla agrees to play, I have a hard time seeing a real future for this competition. Not every European team is going to agree to play this. The real Intercontinental Cup ended in 2004, some glorified friendly should not be connected to the history of that competition.
My two cents.

The intercontinental cup didn't involve the Uefa cup winners, and it wasn't traditional, it's a relatively recent competition when compared to tournaments such as the FA Cup.

The proposal is to have the UEFA cup winner play the Sudamericana cup winner. Boca is the reigning Sudamericana champion. The article obviously made an error, mixing Libertadores cup with Sudamericana cup.

Depends what you mean by traditional. Obviously it doesn't go back in time as far as tournaments like the FA Cup, but it has a lot more history than most of the international tournaments that have recently proliferated.
It was the first serious attempt at organized competition between clubs from different continents. It began in 1960, and over the years many of the game's trully legendary players and clubs have participated in this competition.

Huh? Boca just try to play any team they can. Unlike other clubs they love to travel the globe and play teams from all over the continent. Recently half the squad played friendlies in Israel while the other half played in Mexico!
Boca is a competitive club who likes to challenge and doesn't back down from playing anyone. Last year they wanted to play Liverpool who backed off.
I'm glad Sevilla decided to play. It should be a good game considering the form Sevilla is in so far in La Liga.

That is exactly what I heard. The attempt is to revive it by having the UEFA and Copa Sudamericana champions play against each other.
