Is this Matsuzaka deal the first example of a "transfer fee" in Major League Baseball?

I don't know, but the way everyone is freaking out about actually having to pay a team compensation for signing a player still in contract makes me think so. But I guess all the other Japanese that come to the U.S. to play were out of contract when they came.

Nope.

No Ichiro I think cost about $14 million.

The odd reaction is simply due to the fact that baseball folks aren't used to it.

In any event, if I were still consulting for the Red Sox I'd probably have given the thumbs down on this one and they would have gone ahead and done it anyway. :) We'll see whose right this time, but for the outlay anything less than Cy Young caliber performances would make it a bad deal.

That's unfortunate. They may not be actively seeking to sell the team, but they should be open to listen to interested parties.

As I am not able to start my own topic yet, can I ask,

Have the rules on wages been changed, making a the USA a more exciting prospect for Mr Beckham and other European players.

Also as a Manchester City fan, I would appreciate your opinions on Claudio Reyna and DeMarcus Beasley.

Welcome to the boards!

Go to the MLS: News & Analysis and USA Men: News & Analysis forums for dozens of threads on these topics.

Bottom line:
Yes, the rules on wages have been changed slightly. The USA may be an exciting prospect for Mr Beckham and other European players, but it's not because of the wages MLS has to offer. It's because of the ancillary benefits.

Reyna: old and washed-up. Will probably end up at New York soon for his retirement tour of duty.

Beasley: the jury is still out. We are hopeful he regains his form that he showed early on at PSV and from 02-04 with the USMNT.
