I was at the Beautiful Game forum and watched a video of an own goal. Pretty funny.
The worst own goal I've ever seen was when I was in eighth grade watching my future high school varsity play in a championship. The keeper for the other team makes an amazing pk save in the lower corner, catching it with both hands. He gets up to throw the ball but as his throwing arm goes back, he nicks the post and the ball falls out of his hand and into the goal.
The worst own goal I've ever scored was when I used to play Right defense in my youth league. The cross came in and I half volleyed it into the side netting.
Pretty embarassing to score an own goal, but funny to witness them sometimes. Just wondering how weird you guys might have scored an own goal, or witnessed one.

Andres Escobar, Colombia vs. the United States, 1994 World Cup. Not so much for the own goal per se, but the tragic consequences which occurred later to the player who scored the own goal.

I was involved in one wild own goal once. I was guarding the far post on a corner kick when the ball went to a dangerous spot right in front of the goal. The sweeper, however, caught the ball as it was going goal-bound and slammed it into the keeper's chest. Stunned, the keeper turned to his left right after receiving the ball and ran into me. The ball bounced out of his grasp and went in for an own-goal.

Jeff Agoos is that you?

Other than what I have see on television (Agoos gets my vote for scoring at a really bad time), I haven't seen (in person) and truly great own goals. I have committed one, and am glad I never did again in any competitive games. I think I was 11 and was coming back from being caught upfield (I was a midfielder at the time) when possession changed, and as I rush back, the ball was crossed in and I tried to volley it back out, but it grazed off the side of my foot...and well, you get the rest. Similar to Agoos this summer, but without the spectacular finish.

I play almost everynight of the week right now and all the leagues except my Friday night Co-Ed indoor league are pretty high level games so if there is an own goal its usually a deflection nothing spectacular like an Agoos or anything.

Well anyway my co-ed team is is pretty stacked, we placed like 3rd in the nation two years running so the league can get pretty boring when your winning 30-0,everynow and then we spice it up for a laugh or two this one story.

We were playing this one team we were pretty cool with, everyone knows everyone else and doesn't take it real serious, so we were up like 20-1 and we pulled our goalkeeper and put in this guy on our team who has good foot skills but sometimes talks trash to the other teams. While he was in the goal we got a kick off to start the 2nd half and I called for a drop, as soon as I got the ball I played around with it for a sec and then faked a drop to the guy playing goalie, he looked at me for a sec and I just blasted one right past him in to the top corner.

Everyone even the ref's started to crack up, so on the kick off our striker turns and blasts one on him from midfeild and scores too.

It might sound like a a$$hole thing to do with the other team getting beat so bad, but they thought it was funny too just because of who was playing keeper at the time.

The worst own goal that I have ever participated in was in the 8th grade. I was playing right back and this was the first year that the rule for no back-passing to the keeper went into effect for middle school teams in our region. So in this game, of course the inevitable happens and a kid playing defense is under pressure and passes the ball back to the keeper who looks at him with the expression on his face of absolute confusion. So, instead of playing the ball with his feet, he starts to bend over to pick the ball up and I yell out, "No hands!" So instead, he lets the ball roll clean between his legs and weakly across the goal line. Definitely an embarrasing moment for youth soccer. I dont think he played in goal again that year.

Well, a ball was coming in front of the net. The keeper didn't really like to call things out. But, at the very last second, he called me off of the ball. However, my leg had already started moving forward. I wasn't able to get my foot completely out of the way and the ball grazed my foot, went past the keeper, and in the net. From then on, I never listened to the keeper on any close plays.

I've scored one that puts both Agoos and Hasselbaink to shame. I was playing left mid, and received the ball with our left back caught upfield and no passes open except the keeper. I must have lost my footing or something, but in any case I committed probably one the worst mishits in the history of the game. From more than 40 yards out, I managed to strike it over the outstretched hands of our keeper and in off the post near the upper corner. Most brilliant own-goal ever?

The most embarrassing own-goal I've ever seen was in a match between Bayern München and IFK Göteborg. Bayern are up 5-0 or 5-1, and one of their defenders passed back to Kahn. No pressure at all, so Kahn apparently decided to take his time. He lifted his foot to stop the ball... and the ball just rolled under it and over the line.

I was coaching a U-11 game as a storm was rolling in. Our keeper decided to punt into heavy wind and the ball ended up going behind him into the goal. Granted, he was only a few yards off his line, but it was an odd thing to see.

I was playing my first night game. I couldn't see well and it was muddy and defending a corner kick, I decided to position myself on the near side of the goal to keep any low hard cross from coming in. I didn't notice the guy taking it was leftfooted and it was going to swing in. I thought I was going to be able to head it away but the ball was warbling and kept coming in, but I still thought I could get inside of it without moving my feet. But it kept coming in and at the last second I jerked my head left to try to get inside of it and boom -- the ball was in the upper corner before I could even turn my head to see it. People told me later it almost put a hole in the net. really, Brian Mcbride or Alan Shearer would have been proud of the power I put on that header. I have no idea how I did it. I've never come close to duplicating it at the right end of the field.

Agoos' WC goal was actually the best own goal I've ever seen . . . that ball was clinically buried!

I think we all can agree that Pat Onstad's own goal out-does all these. He has certainly rised(or lowered) the bar, with ever way you want to look at it.

Nicola Caricola's last minute own-goal in 1996 at the Metros opener against the Revs at Giants Stadium. He was trying to clear the ball over the crossbar, but didn't quite make it....

Not that I actually saw it, but how about the African game this summer where the team went on an own-goal protest and scored some 162 goals on themselves in a match.

WUSA pre-season match in March, 2002 in Richmond VA between New York and Boston. NY defender sends an ordinary lazy backpass straight back to her keeper. Keeper steps forward to boot it, whiffs completely, and the ball rolls softly into the net. Boston goes on to win 2-1. Sad thing is it's the defender that got the OG (though you shouldn't put it on-frame admittedly). Needless to say, the keeper didn't make the roster.

Staying with the women, Brandi Chastain's OG four minutes into the WWC quarterfinal against Germany was a doozy. Goose's was world class!

i was a ball girl at the wusa game in richmond. and i was at jkc stadium for the us-germany game.

anyway, some teammate of mine a long time ago had a ball ricochet off his butt and go in the net. we lost 12-0, needless to say.
