Start me up: The sound of Vista (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15656246/)
Long process results in short Windows clip you’ll hear a million times (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15656246/)
With the highly anticipated release of Windows Vista. Here is a tease of some of offerings. Pretty interesting how this stuff is thought out... :p :p

I wonder what percentage of Windows users either keep their system sound turned off, or change it to play what they want to hear.
If i'm playing music, the last thing I want to hear is Windows beeping at me. I usually have my speakers turned off.

it took 18 months for that? man, I'd hate to hear what didn't make the cut.

why don't all of you sick ******** start worrying about your stupid mac instead of making stupid thread like this?
The M$ apologist is a wee bit peeved, I see. Looks good in yellow. :)
So what sounds have y'all used to replace the obsequious start-up sound?
One of my favourites was Robin William's shouting "Good Morning, Vietnam". The system stayed on 24-X (X being the variable amount of time before some Win95 resource would become exhausted and force a restart. ;) ). Working at 2 or 3 in the morning it could be a surprise.
Another sound I used was some female BBC announcer saying, "London calling".
For a closer I used Kathleen Turner: "Was it as good for you as it was for me?"

actually, my original post was making fun of noaimtch's predictable response. amazingly, it was very close to what he did post.
Nice yellow card, clown. it looks good on you.
you can love MS noaimtch and still think that that little ditty wasn't quite worth 18 months of work.
you know, perfecting that little number was what probably caused all the delays.
I hadn't replaced any start up sounds since back in the day ... but I believe at the time, the Beavis and Butt-head sounds were used to great success.

My productivity increased 30% after hearing that sound.
See, this is why Microsoft will always be superior to the Mac, because whereas OS X creators were satisfied with a simple, pedestrian chime, Microsoft spent 18 months perfecting their startup sound.

You know what would be awesome? An American Idol-style reality show called "I Want to Turn You On", a 20-week search for America's favorite startup sound.

One of the first things I do with a new copy of Windows or a Windows program is mute almost all of the sounds.

you know, it's not any stupider than some of the other crap that's out there on TV.

As someone who uses computers all the time, and makes sounds and custom music.... this doesn't SUCK, but it definitely could have been better.

Well, the thing has to be bearable for days, month and years. I guess it is. It sounds like 'I wake up and I'm relax'...
I customized my puter with my own voice once; it lasted two hours...I did change the original start up jingle though (Win2000).

All this talk of startup sounds reminds me of when I used to work at ZEOS many moons ago in tech support.... back when a huge hard drive was 200MB and sound cards were an expensive novelty, this one guy had a WAV file of the entire song "Master of Puppets" by Metallica as his Windows 3.1 start sound. At CD quality, that sound file took up probably 15-20% of his entire hard drive :D

That's not a quick song, either. 8:38 and it's the longest song on the album AND it's the only one off the album that gets airtime too.

The short startup clip that was eventually chosen is meant to evoke the rhythm of the words "Win-dows Vis-ta!"
I don't hear it.....but it doesn't sound good anyway.

The worst sound is turning on your computer in the morning, stepping away for a few minutes to find it has frozen except the mouse. When you move and click a bit DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG
Lets just play the loudest cpu sound ever through the speakers, why don't we? Then I have to hard boot. Piece of crap....
