I personally don't want an MLS team in a city as small as Ottawa when there are other great bids. But Melnyk is pure class, and it seems like he would be a great owner for MLS.

I feel very conflicted here, because while I don't really want Ottawa in MLS I do want Melnyk in. Maybe Ottawa can actually work with him in charge.

Though from the looks of it, if he's aiming for 2013 then he's not aiming for a spot in this expansion round.

I disagree. I think Melnyk believes that MLS will name four cities in March instead of two, therefore he'd expect that Ottawa would be named #19 or #20 in 2009 instead of 17 or 18. It would only make sense. If he didn't think Ottawa had a chance at being named now, he probably would have dropped out already.

Garber - in an interview from Portland - expressly stated that they will not be naming 4 teams.

I like their logo.

Speaking of the logo...

In the artwork thread, I made a couple Ottawa Mock-Ups with the crest (with some modifications).

tee hee.

doubt if they would be the one though......with Melnyk/Senator Sports already existing/strong relationship with Scotiabank...I would suspect that any TFC v Capital City FC match would be a battle of the banks!!!!

The kits look great, but AC is a misnomer; they are a franchise, not a team from an athletic club. I'd like to see you try Nationals; redo the crest, with the old "ON" WHA logo inside the soccer ball. I think it'd look cool, and as good as any of your excellent work.

I noticed these in the artwork thread when you first posted them, excellent work! The black one in particular is slick. I'd buy one in a second.

I agree with TOareaFan though that Scotiabank is more likely as a sponsor, although Tim Hortons would probably make the kits more popular.

Myself, I'd be pretty stoked if Moosehead were the eventual sponsor.

MLS wouldn't allow it. Budweiser is a League Sponsor and they wouldn't allow a competing product to be plastered all over the kits of one of the teams. That is the only reason why Carlsberg isn't the shirt sponsor for TFC.

Garber will be in town next week and there will be a press conference, according to Cyril Leeder COO of Senators Sports and Entertainment on the Radio yesterday. Ottawa is the last city in his tour of MLS expansion cities apparently.

I don't know the exact date as I didn't hear the interview myself, but my friend called to tell me he just heard it on the radio and i forgot the date. I believe it was early in the week.

From marketwire:

Major League Soccer (MLS) commissioner Don Garber and president Mark Abbott will stop in Ottawa on Monday, Jan. 26, and Tuesday, Jan. 27, as part of their mandate to visit cities bidding for one of two new franchises for the 2011 season.

In addition to attending a variety of meetings, Garber and Abbott will join Senators Sports & Entertainment owner Eugene Melnyk and COO Cyril Leeder for a media availability on Tuesday, Jan. 27, at 12:30 p.m. at Scotiabank Place's Club Red restaurant. From today's Ottawa Citizen:

Let the stadium battle begin

(http://www.ottawacitizen.com/Sports/stadium+battle+begin/1212628/story.html)Items of note:

Therefore, this has become a CFL or MLS fight.

[...]

"We are definitely still in the hunt for 2011," [Leeder] says. "We think the league has a bright future. We made the same assessment when we were looking for an NHL franchise. They were asking $50 million. If we had waited four or five expansions before trying to get in, the fee was going up, $75, $85, $125 million. If Winnipeg or Quebec thought they wanted to get back in now, they would be looking at a $200-million price tag.

[...]

"We have spent significant dollars on research," he says. "And we have some really good stuff. In fact, it has scared us on the hockey side. The interest for soccer and familiarity with the game in Ottawa and Gatineau is higher than hockey." Leeder also says that 75 per cent of Senators fans attending games have children who are interested in soccer, that one in seven of those asked would buy season tickets and 50 per cent would take in individual games.

I will not be disappointed if Ottawa is awarded a franchise. I don't think Ottawa's bid is any more of a long shot than any other bid. Ultimately, I am excited that people are willing to invest into this league. I'm looking forward to reading all of the news coming out of Ottawa this upcoming week. Best of luck to Ottawa as they try to settle on a Stadium plan.
