I am fascinated by the league system in England. What really interests me is the ability for so many teams in the Championship league and league 1 + 2 to exist. (Obviously, I am used to the US and the struggle that professional leagues have had.) Does anyone know what kind of salary the players in these leagues make? Obviously the players in the EPL pull down the big salaries, but what about the players on teams like Barnsley or Sheff Wed.?

the exact average salaries are available somewhere, but as a rule of thumb you could say, for players in the first team squads
CCC: £3000 a week
Lg 1: £1500 a week
Lg 2: £1000 a week
As for paying for those salaries, the average ticket prices/crowds in each division are roughly...
CCC: £22/17,500
Lg 1: £18/7,500
Lg 2: £16/4,500
Clubs also don't have to pay the high travel costs american clubs face, nor have to spend so much of their budget on crippling rental fees.

the figure of £13000 a week for a premiership player is probably slightly skewed by premiership clubs tending to have larger squads, with a reserve team being players of an age that might be the youth team elsewhere in the game.
Figures below the league are awkward as players are usually part time. Full time players at conference level, I'd guess, are probably in the £500 a week region. Part time players would be on perhaps half that amount, probably less.
Below that, in the conference N&S, players would be doing well to get £100 a week out of it. Slightly less in the Southern/Northern/Ithsmian leagues, as crowd levels aren't hugely different, but much less in the division below. Many at that level would be getting little more than expenses. With crowds of around 150 being the norm, there wouldn't be much in the kitty to pay wages.

Thanks Richard.
I was thinking around abouts the same £600 for a conference player.
and a couple of hundred for the north/south.

The average wage at my local Conference South club, Newport County FC, is probably around £250, but they're probably a special case, being the best supported team in the league.
