Veron may not have had the greatest season last year, but before that he was awesome

It's OK, a lot of people who slagged off Veron last year will learn very shortly...

The fact is that Arsenal more or less ran away with it last year and they may be stronger this time around. Manure won it before that, and I think we can bet our mortgages that they will be stronger. Diouf looks a good player, but we have no idea how we will cope in a new league, Owen is oft injured, and at some point the predictable Heskey style is going to be nullified. Leeds under Venables will be thereabouts, and there may even be one or two others in the running two (Newcastle, and don't underestimate a couple of dark horses as well). I think it more likely, personally, that Liverpool will finish fifth than first, though they should be in the top four.
You can compile a list if potential deficiencies for any team, throughout the league (in fact, they did that very same thing very well in the Observer yesterday). For example, United are fielding their worst defence since the early 1970's, plus Rio Ferdinand. As the next month may show, injury to their latest expensively acquired toy could cost them dearly. Then there’s Veron - he is a fine player but fine players don’t always make it everywhere they play. Ian Rush found that out at Juventus. Then add the fact that Demento has spent the entire time Veron has been at the club visibly struggling to work out what to do with his impulse buy and shows no signs of having solved that conundrum. Then there’s Diego Forlan - I mean, he was bought to fill Andy Cole’s place, but the imitation thus far has been a bit TOO good. Right down to the enduring love affair with Row G.
Arsenal are a very classy side with strength throughout, but with Ljundberg, van Bronkhurst and Pires out, they will need very solid performances from the stand-ins and the new boys if they are to get good momentum early.
As to the likely top three, I don't think anyone will break into it as it is currently established, but within that top three any team could end up in any position. Liverpool still have work to do to play with the same level of consistent authority that Arsenal and the Rags but it is within our means to do it.

I have to pretty much agree with this post. If we can stay with the leaders up until Pires and Ljungberg come back then I think we can kick on from there.
Watching Liverpool yesterday, I thought they were a bit one-dimensional. I know it's ironic coming from an Arsenal fan, but I thought the only real danger was from set-pieces. Apart from one slick passing move in the first half, it was hoofing it up for Heskey to try and win in the air or Owen to latch onto over the top. Good defenders will cope with this easily. I can't see where the inspiration in midfield will come from such as a Pires who drove us on to the title last year.

Not always true, how many key players did Arsenal lose for long periods of last season due to injury or suspension? I think it's vital to have a big squad if you want to win the league but that is not all you need.
You also need a good team spirit in which even the lesser players can step in for an injured star and perform above their normal expected levels. It also helps to have a bit of good luck as well.;)

This is how Houllier likes to see them play and this is why they will not win the title.

Judging how they are throwing away points against Blackburn and Newcastle when they have had the lead...looks like themselves!?!?!?!?
