Italians have caught on quick. (http://sports.yahoo.com/sow/news?slug=afp-fblitaattendances&prov=afp&type=lgns) Some may say that attendance is down because Juventus is down, but I think it's more likely that Italy knows a fix when they see it.

After 10 matches this season, the average attendance of a top flight game has fallen to 19,361 - its lowest figure for 40 years, the La Repubblica newspaper has reported.
What's MLS's average attendance, by the way?

Many things have contributed to the fall of Italian attendance.

One reason is that Serie B seems to be more interesting than Serie A this year. It's a fight between Juventus, Napoli, and other good teams to get promoted. Every stadium in Sere B that Juventus plays in sells out. Also Napoli's stadium is full every home game.

In Serie A there are some stadiums that are always sold out (Fiorentina and Palermo come to mind), and most teams get high attendance for every game (Milan, Inter, Roma). But there are some teams where people just don't really come to the stadium.

The scandal has turned many fans off, and the stadiums are old an outdated.

That's why if Italy wins the Euro 2012 bid, they will benefit because they will get to build new state of the art stadiums and hopefully attract more fans.

...and if they get Euro 2012, they need to do a better job than they did for Italia '90, which gave Italian football the albatross that is the Estadio delle Alpi Turín.

For 2006 is was 15,504 as a league. LA averaged 20k home leading the league.

Yeah for some reason in Italy they felt that a stadium needed a running track around the field so they can hold track and field events and such, but most of the stadiums never even use the running tracks.

Perhaps the Italians are much glory hunters as US fans and only come out to see the big guys win. Now that the big teams have been punished or relegated, no one wants to watch soccer.

They obviously need playoffs and conferences.

there was an article on soccernet just a week or two ago about precisely this issue... i just spent 10 minutes looking for it, however, and can't find it. perhaps someone else can?

i know one point that was raised (in addition to juventus being in serie b) is the fact that there are some small market teams in serie a at the moment.

And wasn't someone banned from playing at home for a bit?

Yeah, and I can't for the life of me remember who. I saw one of their games on FSC against Lazio and it seemed like an off-crowd for a USL-2 match.

Real attendance is about 10-11k. Fake is about 15-16k.

I agree about the stadiums.
Too many of them have running tracks around them.
They are bad for the fan's.
A good example is the Delle Alpi in Turin, while it looks
impressive from the outside it's just a bad stadium for
fans to watch a game in.

Running tracks are almost necessary it seems...it provides a good barrier from players and extreme fans...who tend to ruin the game for people when they throw objects at the players and referees. I'd love to see them have more stadiums like they do in England...but the curva fans are just so extreme...

IN defense of pro wrestling (well, old timey pro wrestling-not the stuff out today): it's fake, but who cares?

Movies are fake. Arnie & Sly never killed all those guys. Did it ruin T2 or Rambo for you?

TV is fake. Hugh Laurie is not a doctor and didn't save anybodys life. Does that ruin House for you?

The theater is fake. Matthew Broderick is not a accountant/producer making a show to lose money. Does that ruin The Producers for you?

Pro wrestling is a different kind of theater.

true, cities like Empoli, Ascoli Piceno, and Siena aren't really the biggest in Italy. They all have populations under 100,000.

Arnie and Sly never killed all those guys? I, I just don't know how to react to this...

Yeh, a lot of the decline can be put down to the current mix of clubs in Serie A. With Juventus, Genoa, Napoli and Bologna all in Serie B for one reason or another, it's hardly surprising that attendances are down. Otoh, attendances in Serie A have been declining for most of this decade, so clearly this isn't the only factor.
