The top Premiership team meets the bottom Championship side away at Roots Hall.

Should be a tough test for our youngsters, but hopefully they'll perform better than they did against Crewe.

I would expect a side similar to the one that faced Crewe, except of course without Ole as he's out for between 4 and 6 weeks. Ritchie Jones is on loan with Colchester United, so he won't feature in this game either.

Likely line-up:
................Kuszscak..................
Gray....Brown....Silvestre.....Heinze
Lee.....O'Shea....D.Jones.....Richardson
............Smith......Burns?.............

Hopefully we'll see a much more promising display from Jonah. For Smith another 90 minutes under his belt will help his progress back to the first team reckoning.

I hope its Fletcher in the middle with Jones.

Fergie said it will be quite a strong squad he will bring. I think he said on MUTV that he will be bringing Ronaldo and Rooney, as well as Smith, Heinze, Fletcher, Shawcross, Jones and Lee.

I would expect Fletcher to get a start as he has been on the bench for Bolton and Pompey. I also think we will see either Saha or Rooney up front with Smith.

agreed, I really don't think Ferguie wants to see us struggle as much as we did last time.

Please.....

The best news for Jones is that Ritchie is on loan and can't be an anchor this game. Now, hopefully he gets a first teamer besides him at least. I hope it's not O'Shea and would rather it be Fletcher, but if it has to be O'Shea.. then so be it... he actually has found someone in the 'squad' he is better than at CM in Ritchie...

I doubt we will risk a single player heavily involved in our title challenge thingy, nor should we. That team should be good enough to win comfortably. Kieran Lee is easily the most ready of that young bunch'a kids in reserves right now and he also deserves a start after literally bailing us out last round. Aaron Burns, simply because he is fast and stronger than Brandy.

Burns had a nice hat-trick for the reserves a few weeks back.

I know it's better for their development, but I wish some of the kids weren't out on loan. I would've loved to have seen something similar to this against Southend:

.................Kuszscak.................
Simpson....Pique....Evans.......Heinze
Martin....Gibson...D.Jones......Richardson
............Smith......Rossi..............

Going to make for an interesting game. I wouldn't be suprised if Fletcher plays CM in this one. Hopefully a good performance from him will help Jones along.

I hope Fergie sticks with the youth. If we can keep fit we can win the league this year...no need to go all out for the Carling Cup.

BBC Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo will figure for Manchester United, with only Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Gary Neville and Edwin van der Sar missing the trip.

Ryan Shawcross, David Jones, David Gray and Kieran Lee will all be involved.

Man Utd (from): Kuszczak, Heaton, Gray, Brown, Ferdinand, Vidic, O'Shea, Silvestre, Heinze, Lee, Evra, Fletcher, Carrick, Jones, Richardson, Ronaldo, Smith, Saha, Rooney, Shawcross.

I would assume the squad is packed out for the 'break glass in case of emergency' scenario we struggled with last round. I hope we don't use our league guns, tbh.An injury in the CC, for no reason, would be unacceptable.

I don't think we're capable of struggling as much as we did last time. What a rubbish game that was.

I'd love to see D.Jones with O'Shea anchoring, Fletch on the right (ie total freedom for Jones).

But if you look at the strikers.. it looks like Saha or Rooney will line-up alongside Smith.. unless he plays Richardson up top.

I'm gonna call it now. Smithy with a hat trick. Why? Cuz I said so, and dammit I wanna see him with the first squad again!

There's no reason we can't win this convincingly, unless we go in thinking we can win it convincingly. ;)

That's exactly right.. I think Wazza and Ronaldo will be subbed in if needed.. I see no reason why they would though. Southend is plumetting to the bottom and should not give us too much trouble. That said, we saw how the last game went.. 2-0 for the Reds..

Rooney will probably start. He's a beast.
