Fifa will propose a limit on the number of foreigners who can play for a club and are also set to give players an official voice in decision-making.

World football's governing body has joined forces with international players' association FifPro in order to tackle the problems facing the sport.

Their proposal is the implementation of a six plus five system, whereby six members of a side must be homegrown.

Will FIFA even be allowed to do this? Wouldn't the EU have a fit about this?

Arsene Wenger complains (I wonder why:rolleyes: )

I would actually like to see this happen. It's about time big clubs start integrating homegrown talent. Look at teams like Inter and Arsenal, they have very few players from their home nation. Instead of buying all these high priced foreigners I'd like to see some emerging talent from their respective country bought.

Actually I understand where Arsenal Whinger is saying. He wants to win and if the clubs can pay big dosh for better players, then there are better football quality to enjoy.

However growing your home players is fair comment too because the paid salary for high cost foreigners is getting out of control.

It is true that a home-grown players get to train among quality players to lift his standard so to capping off 5 foreigners on the field is fine only if the match day squad on the bench is expanded for substitution purposes.

But I think that in the European championships, it should be different. That in the European Championships, there should be capping off 5 non-europeans players on the field.

And for intercontinential club matches, it should be open and no capping offs.

I think it should retain some context in regards to competition status.

It'd be excellent if FIFA did this.

I don't like it.

What does this do to the large mass of quality players in non-EU/non-UEFA leagues and countries?

Every player should have the ability ot ply their trade in the largest, richest and most competitive leagues. Regardless of heritage or citizenship.

All this will do is cause high money [English, Spanish, Italian, etc.] teams to fish out youth prospects from underdeveloped nations with underdeveloped club systems. That's more dangerous for both the player and club b.c youth prospects are always a gamble regardless of pedigree.

Stupid, stupid rule. The world is muti-cultural, football should be too. Arsenal/Inter have "yadda yadda" is a BS argument.

100 % agreed, + they say one of the reasons is to get young prospects from the same country but these countries already have and have been getting young prospects the old way

It is not going to happen. FIFA cannot overule EU laws. FIFA cannot stop Arsenal from hiring 6 French citizens on their roster. So it does not concern leagues inside EU. Most leagues outside EU have their own rules against foreign players. So it does not affect anywhere else when the question of EU citizenship applied.

Fifa should not interefere with the way individual leagues/clubs are run. They should stick to running the World Cup and nothing else.

Cutting down on foreigners would be a stupid idea. Why should a player be picked just because he's the 'right' nationality? In the rich countries it would just inflate the prices of average, domestic players. Players like Owen and Crouch already cost stupid amounts, imagine those numbers doubled...

This was the SMARTEST thing i ever heard from Blatter mouth...

Its about time we impose some rules on foreing players in leagues across Europe, Bosman killed alot of leagues and teams, money in football became even more important, teams from leagues with rich revenues started buying everywhere at any price, depleting teams and leagues across europe and the world, the fans from those teams who often in the past would see a great player stay with them for the entire career now can only hope to maintain a great player 1 or 2 seasons, simply because there are no limits on foreigners and to much money everywhere and ridiculous wages being paid.

It is not going to happen. FIFA cannot overule EU laws.

There was some discussion about the EU regarding football as a special case.

It would be a retrogression.

Fifa are better off making sure clubs don't need this many players in the first place.
