View Full Version : British style narration is boring and insipid

I can't decide which is worse;Mexican narration or the British style narrative. Being poly-lingual i'm privy to able to compare various styles. And i must say the Argentinian approach is by very far the best. Was watching GOLTV spansish league broadcast. This Brit commentator hardly spoke or named the players-just total silence. Even though your eyes are watching, most of the time, unless they do close -ups of the players you can't make out who they are. And when these guys finally do speak, they whisper their words or seem dis-interested. I find this to be true over and over again. After all this is not golf and yet these dullards manage to make the most exciting sport in the world seem mundane.

Paul Green Turner and the rest of them, they don't do or know how to do play by play commentary. They either sound smug or tired. Perhaps too many pints embied.

Paul Green Turner...
Is that Paul Breen Turner's twin brother?
...they don't do or know how to do play by play commentary.
You would prefer them to be replaced by Dave O'Brien and Balboa perhaps? Or how about a dream-team of Christian Miles with Ray Hudson (who happens to be British as well, BTW)?

It was fantastic listening to Paul Breen Turner call the Deportivo La Coruna vs. Barcelona match yesterday.
Thanks you, thank you, thank you GolTV!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
All is right in the world when Paul Breen Turner calls his weekly La Liga match on GolTV!!!

Paul Breen Turner, Martin Tyler, Andy Gray and Paddy Agnew rule!!!!!
So does the Englishman who calls high-profile Bundesliga matches on GolTV (his name escapes me right now).

And there are British commentators who suck, like David Pleat, who pops up on some EPL telecasts. Most of the ones on the international feeds are okay to excellent however.

I would wish. I don't think it is. It's someone else, maybe others here would know his name off the top of their head.
I didn't think Toby Charles is an Englishman, BTW. He's Welsh, if my memory serves right. Yeah, that's still British to fit the original post in this thread. But doesn't fit my restrictive "Englishman" description.

Agreed. Pleat puts the bloviating in gasbag.

Also agreed. I haven't heard Paddy Agnew on Gol this year, though, and it's a real loss.

I think he is referring to Ray Hudson. The Gol TV guys don't know the leagues or the players. They are trying to learn but it shows.
I agree, I prefer my commentators live at the game. But for me most of the Brits are quality Paul Breen Turner, Paddy Agnew, Martin Tyler, etc.

The one Brit who does the Bundesliga matches on GolTV is a REALLY jolly fellow:rolleyes:
The British guy who called today's Schalke 04 vs. Bayern Muenchen match was fantastic. Especially his calls around goals, goals called off for offside (either correctly or otherwise, which is subject to debate and off-topic for this thread) were full of energy and great! (And by that, I don't mean the juveniule Ray Hudson screaming.) Even his extra comments about how Oliver Kahn can get away with some things in Bundesliga without picking up yellow card, while other keepers can't, how Uli Hoeness' face could turn from a pale shade of pink to red to deep purple, all those things were hilarious, and very enjoyable! It was clear from his commentary that he was based in Germany and deeply knowledgable about Bundesliga.
Unfortuately I don't know his name, but would really like to find out what it is.
I must commend GolTV for passing through English commentary from the guy based in Germany, instead of thursting Ray Hudson or Lindsay or whoever upon us.

Well thats the problem with most american based announcers, they try to call the match play by play, never shut up and let the game sell itself.
Wish Paul Breen Turner did every La Liga match.
Hudson and co are horrendous, I had to switch to Spanish just to get rid of there constant drivel throughout El Classico, they never quit.
On another note, does anyone know why Gol has horrible audio?
