I actually really agree with OGHT. I was in the dealership today and they had a few of them, and my argument against that car was that people are becoming lazier drivers, and if they need help parking their vehicle, chances are they shouldn't even be driving it. The cherry on top? Check the average age of the people that drive that model... scarey!

If this is your point...

Then this negates it...

Why? Because people our age aren't buying these things. People aren't becoming lazier because of stuff like this at all. People our age aren't seeing this technology. This technology is geared 100% towards people the demographic that have the poorest driving record behind teenagers. This is something that's going to help bring insurance costs down and leave the regular people like ourselves with less scratches and dents in our bumper when we return to our car from the grocery store.

And OGHT? How, exactly, does driving an SUV make one a worse driver?

This should be good.

No matter your age, I don't think you should still be driving when you can't park your car yourself.

Then you clearly missed my point. I know the demographic that it is geared towards (and it's not just the elderly/retirees either). So logically I think - if people don't have the ability to park their cars on their own, then they shouldn't be driving in the first place - in part because there are loads of other things that they may fail as well. It's not just them attempting to parallel park on Newbury Street. It's them looking left then right, then forgetting how close the car was to the left (or forgetting there was a car there in the first place) or hitting the accelerator instead of the brake. Also - you're assuming that they'll really use it. As for the insurance costs... even if it is that demographic, what percentage of that demographic can afford the vehicle, and then what percentage of the demographic will chose the vehicle for starters. If this car did have an impact on insurance costs, it would be a minimal one at best. When I used to write auto/ho insurance, Lexus was always rated high, but not quite as high as some of the other imports.

Maybe what'd ultimately be best is the way the future was laid out in iRobot, where people don't do anything. :D

For SUV's, I don't think the vehicle itself makes someone a worse driver. But due to the number of them I see in ditches during the winters where I live and the chicks & dopes standing on the side of the road with tears in their faces or with the "Oh my God what happened??" expression, I'd say there are plenty of people driving them that have a false sense of security and perhaps aren't as careful as they might be (might being the operative word) if they were driving something else.

because, at least in my many, MANY miles of experience, theyre a lot less attentive as drivers. a general statement, i know, but i find it to be true.

People who drive very comfortable cars are likely to be less attentive unless they're good experienced drivers. Unfortunately, most cars today give a unrealistic sense of safety while you're travelling with a vehicle that's usually above 1.5 t (I'm talking about most everyday cars). Combine that with everything that takes the driver's attention away and their non vigilant behaviour...

Roughly, it's about a device that allows you to keep both hands on the steering wheel...

"I have my hands on the steering wheel and I *expletive* you !" :D
