"Clássico" question: Cruzeiro x Atl. Mineiro [R]

i was impressed to see the size of the crowd in the Minerao this Saturday for the Atl. Mineiro x Santos game. The number of pagantes was given at 31,000, but since women and children were admitted either for free or at a nominal price, it certainly appeared that the upper ring of the stadium was filled and the the lower section certainly had a hugh number of people. I am sure that the number of people in the Mineraro was closer to 50,000.

I noticed the same sort of attendance for Cruzeiro's game in the Minerao last week.

This stands in marked contrast to the crowd in Pacembeau on April 6 for the Corinthians x Alt. Minero game. There, the pagantes was given as 4,000, so maybe there were 10,000 in the arquibancadas. Some of the games I've seen televised from Maracana or São Januario look and sound like there are 25 people present. (i realize that the crime situation in Rio really impacts on attendance, especially if the traficantes give the "comercio fechado" order :-( ).

Looking at the Galo web site, they are very proud of the fact that they have lead the Brasilian league in average attendance 3-4 years in a row, coming in at 35,000 people per match. This is impressive especially considering that, unlike the Rio and São Paulo sides they have only one real inter-city rival - Cruzeiro - (not really counting America-MG since they are in the Serie B anyway).

Could someone explain why Atl. Minero (and I assume Cruzeiro as well) would have such good attendance?

What is the basis of their rivalry? I know Cruzeiro was founded by the Italian colony in Minas Gerais and was called Palestra Italia until Getuilo Vargas ordered German and Italian based teams to "Brasilianize" themselves after Brasil entered WW2 on the side of the Allies. So is Cruzeiro the historic "Italian" based team and Galo the "real" Minero team, or is Cruzeiro the Belo Horizonte-urban team and Galo the "county-side" team?

Teams in Bahia also have good attendances. Atletico is probably my favourite team as my favourite player Cerezo once played there.

yes, I remember him from the 1982 WC and later in Italy. That must have been a strong team because Eder, the winger from that 82' WC side, also played for Galo alongside Cerrezo.

I think the great Tostão (1970 WC) played for Cruzeiro.

Yeah Atlético and Cruzeiro really are over the edge on attendance, even though Cruzeiro's attendance in general(15.000 per game) is really smaller compared to Galo's one... I was in the game Atlético X Santos and I can say I was impressed by the public, since the tickets were so expensive(to brazillian people in general). I think that the Rio and Sao Paulo guys are stopping attending to games, for some reason unknown, while Galo has taken more and more people to Mineirao in the last few years... I think the general people in BH are more fanatic and loyal to their team, and going to the Mineirao its not a risky situation, not as close as going to Rio and Sao Paulo's stadiums, anyway. The rivalry between Atlético and Cruzeiro is great, and started ever since Cruzeiro was created(yeah, Cruzeiro was Palestra italia), and both team started to dispute the hegemony of "who's BH best", and it's really fun... Atlético and Cruzeiro games are pure Rivalry, and the general attendances to those games is about 60.000 people, where we are still supreme(we beat them like 50 times more). I hope this helps you, and also, where are you from? How did u watched the Saturday game?
Just for the record, yeah, in the beggining of the 80's Atlético team was really good, we even got to the finals against Flamengo in 1980(sigh)

hmmm i have no idea what palestra means, i GUESS it means squadron or something, so it would be something like the "italian squadron" since cruzeiro was founded by italian people.... and palmeiras used to be palestra italia too... anyways, cruzeiro are still are much worse than us! This time they're going down(i hope)!

i subscribe to a satelite service that offers rede globo internacional tv. this is how i see the games. I also saw galo CRUSH corinthians 3 x 0 two weeks ago. :-)

i've seen guillherme play a number of times over the last three years and he is my favorite current brasilian player. hw and marques made a nice 1-2 combination. (jairzinho from the 1970 Seleção is my all-time favorite).

i live near a city called newark, new jersey (eua)and a lot of mineiros live there.

i'm looking forward to seeing Atl. Mineiro x Alt. Paraná tommorrow. GALO, FORTE E VINGADOR :-)

Atlético-MG vence o duelo dos "xarás" em plena Arena da Baixada

O Atlético-MG venceu o Atlético-PR por 2 a 1, em plena Arena da Baixada, e assumiu provisoriamente a liderança do Campeonato Brasileiro, com sete pontos e melhor saldo de gols que o Internacional.

Além disso, o time mineiro conseguiu acabar com um tabu de 20 anos sem vencer o seu "xará" paranaense fora de casa. A última vez havia sido em 1983, por 2 a 0. O Atlético-PR continua com apenas três pontos ganhos.

O time paranaense volta a campo pelo Brasileirão na próxima quarta-feira, quando vai até o estádio Oraldo Scarpelli enfrentar o Figueirense. No mesmo dia, os mineiros recebem o Guarani em Belo Horizonte.

O time da casa começou a partida visivelmente ansioso e, com isso, desperdiçava muitos passes fáceis e dificultava o ataque, que não conseguia levar perigo ao gol adversário.

A primeira chance real de gol aconteceu somente aos 14min, quando o atacante Dagoberto invadiu a área pela direita e se esticou para bater e a bola balançar a rede pelo lado de fora.

Aos 21min, foi a vez de Adriano fazer boa jogada individual e bater rasteiro da entrada da área para a bola passar tirando tinta da trave esquerda de Velloso. Dois minutos mais tarde, Ilan aproveitou cruzamento da direita e cabeceou para o goleiro alvinegro fazer excelente defesa.

Depois do susto dos primeiros minutos, o Atlético-MG equilibrou a partida e passou a criar boas oportunidades, como aos 30min, quando Alessandro bateu de fora e a bola desviou na zaga.

O jogo ficou movimentado nos últimos minutos: aos33min, Kléberson recebeu bom passe de Ilan e invadiu a área, mas Velloso se antecipou e mandou a bola para escanteio.

Três minutos mais tarde, o paranaense Adriano cobrou falta, a bola desviou na barreira e obrigou Velloso a aparecer com qualidade novamente e ceder novo escanteio ao adversário.

Os últimos dois lances foram mineiros: aos 38min, Genalvo arriscou um chute colocado de muito longe e quase fez um golaço, mas a bola foi para fora. Quatro minutos depois, Alessandro recebeu de Guilherme e bateu para Diego fazer uma linda defesa à queima roupa.

Os dois times voltaram do intervalo sem a mesma determinação dos primeiros 45min e o início da segunda etapa foi caracterizado pelo excesso nos erros de passe das duas equipes.

O primeiro lance agudo aconteceu apenas aos 8min, quando o lateral Marquinhos, do Atlético-MG, arriscou um chute cruzado pela esquerda e o goleiro Diego fez a defesa em dois tempos.

Dois minutos mais tarde, Guilherme deu grande passe para Alessandro, mas o atacante preferiu bater para o gol em vez de devolver para o companheiro e acabou errando o alvo.

A marcação rubronegra estava muito falha e o Atlético-MG conseguiu um pênalti aos 20min, depois que Rogério Corrêa segurou Alessandro. Mas Guilherme cobrou mal e a bola saiu por cima do gol.

Dois minutos mais tarde, entretanto, Guilherme se redimiu ao dar uma assistência de cabeça para Alexandre, sozinho e dentro da área, tirar o zero do placar.

A alegria mineira durou apenas seis minutos, já que o atacante Ilan usou da malandragem para empatar a partida. Ele dominou uma bola no braço depois do cruzamento e completou para o gol sem que o árbitro Leonardo Gaciba percebesse.

O time da casa ainda teve duas oportunidades de virar o marcador, com Alessandro batendo em cima de Diego, aos 33min, e com Leomar acertando a trave, aos 38min, mas foi o Atlético-MG quem fez o gol da vitória: aos 40min, Alessandro fez fileira na defesa adversária e marcou um golaço.

Globo showed the Atl. Mineiro victory x Atlético-PR, making it 4 games I have seen of Galo so far in this Brasileiro and Copa do Brasil.

I am still learning the players names and patterns so I obviously cannot make any in-depth analysis, especially all the way from New Jersey EUA!

But some thoughts: Atlético-PR has the most modern stadium in Brasil, but the playing surface - gramada - was like a cow pasture. It worked against both sides but probably more against Galo since it is Furacão's home field. It was terrible!

Even though he missed a penalty, Guillerme still was the man-of-the-match (if you don't count the goalie Velloso). He REALLY looks to lay off good passes in the area to his teammates. They must love playing with him. His head pass to Alexandre for the first goal was typical of his skill, vision and unselfishness. How Alexandre was SO wide open in front of the A-PR goal is beyond me, The two defenders appeared nailed to the ground as they ball-watched to initial pass to Guillerme and his subsequent assist header.

Alexandre played in his 100th game for Galo. I hope he plays another 200. Combines well with Guillerme.

Scheidt is on the slow side, contributes nothing to the attack and is overall a one-dimensional player. How he ever got into the Brasilian selecion a few years back is beyond me. He must a Godfather agennt who bribed the CFB, and Celtic, the team who payed $5million for him in a transfer from Gremio in 1999, was really cheated. HOWEVER, within his one demension, Scheidt plays VERY WELL. ALWAYS in the right position, almost never makes a mistake, is flawless in the air especially as you get closer to the goal, is almost never beated one-on-one and is a reliable tackler. His teammates don't expect him to contribute to the attack and play accordingly, leaving him behind as a reliable defender in front of.....

Velloso. Another great game in goal, especially in the second half.

I looked at the schedule and Galo does not play a "glamor" opponent again until May 11 vs. Sao Paulo, so I don't know when I will be seeing them on Globo.

You forgot about André, our defender who just disarms lots of attacks.... and also i think Alessandro made a not-so-good game, but his goal was just fantastic, he passed through 4 defenders in a great skill... Our next game will be Wednesday, against Guarani, in Mineirao, and our local press are saying that probably, if Galo wins that game as well, the moral of the team will increase, and the team will just be hard to stop in his winning campaign

hehehe about the brazillian championship, our 2 great rivals(Cruzeiro and Flamengo) have both scored significant victories against Ponte Preta and Fluminense respectively on the sunday... and are on the lead ahead of Galo... So the top 5 on the leadership board are those

O atacante Alessandro, que garantiu a vitória do Atlético sobre o Furacão, no último sábado, na Arena da Baixada, ao marcar um bonito gol - o segundo do Galo -, foi um dos jogadores mais procurados pela imprensa na reapresentação do grupo, ontem à tarde, no CT de Vespasiano. "Foi uma jogada que sempre estou executando. Sempre que possível, aproveito esse lance. Tenho a convicção de que fiz um gol por mérito, em uma jogada característica, que às vezes a gente tenta, mas não dá certo, e em outras temos sucesso, como foi este caso. Temos nossos companheiros, que sempre olho se estão em melhores condições do que eu. Mas, quando surge a oportunidade, a gente tenta, e graças a Deus consegui fazer", disse o atacante, que explicou por diversas vezes a jogada, em que driblou vários adversários antes de chegar na cara do goleiro Diego, do Atlético/PR.

Para Alessandro, o Atlético está atravessando uma boa fase pelo fato de estar jogando coletivamente. Mesmo lembrando que a sua jogada foi individual, ele ressalta que o que o time tem de mais forte é o conjunto. "Esse tipo de jogada que resultou no gol que marquei é uma característica minha, que sempre faço, quando tenho chance, mas o que sempre procuramos em campo são as que envolvem todo os setores. No próprio jogo contra o Atlético/PR, fiz muitas jogadas deixando os companheiros em condições. Mas tudo isso é fruto de um trabalho, o grupo está de parabéns pelo excelente jogo que fizemos. Poderíamos ter feito mais gols, pois tivemos a posse de bola e chances maravilhosas, mas o time está aí, mostrando uma cara nova, uma filosofia nova", acrescentou o atacante.

O gol de sábado foi o segundo de Alessandro, no Brasileirão. Alexandre fez dois e Guilherme, o outro, totalizando cinco na competição. Para o atacante, "a seqüência de bons jogos que o time está realizando é mérito do grupo, que soube assimilar bem o que o Celso Roth está nos repassando. É importante ressaltar que este foi apenas o terceiro jogo. Sabemos que o campeonato será longo e muito complicado e o que temos de continuar fazendo é trabalhar forte para manter esta fase".

yeah.... as the name says, CT de Vespasiano is the CT(Centro de treinamento) in the city of Vespasiano, and even though its good, I still think Vila Olimpica(here in BH) is better... But if i'm not wrong the CT of Vespasiano is getting some major expansion... this is actually great because the new president/directory of the team are proving themselves to be worthy of thrust... We are happy, because the past presidents of Galo were dirty cowards, who were generally corrupt, and those men were responsible for our team being on the red balance for the last years. Happily, our new president are slowly improvng thinks more and more and soon we will once again be the powerful team we once was... and will always be =)

Hail to Galo, and Wednesday I will be there to watch another great Galo's victory!
