after season one, how/when does the subject of soccer money for the next season come up? does the coach initiate the discussion or does the player? after the season or before the season ends/ What are the chances of getting more money than you started with (if you didn't get alot to start with, but played a lot)?
thanks

Did the coach indicate to you that there might be more money available to your child if they meet certain expectations? I've never heard of an incentive based scholarship before, but suppose it's possible. I would guess that unless you go in with a strong hand that you probably won't see your kids scholarship money increase. And by a strong hand I mean that your child is willing to leave the program altogether if you don't get an increase. You might also want to consider whether the program has anymore money to give. Depending on the school, they may be giving him as close to a full ride as they can.

the coach said last year that the amount was "negotiable" next year, that the amount given was for the first year. he kept stressing "negotiable". I should have negotiated better, i know, but i am a novice at this. i assumed he meant depending on the season. my son started and played lot. i thought he did well ,but i am biased of course. still he did start and play the whole game. thanks for your reply. if the amount is not increased it just means that much more in loans. he loves the school and team. thanks again.

My guess would be it all depends on the school, the coach, and the player. They may only have so much money, the seniors might have it tied up, etc.

Having said that, if he plays a lot and plays well, it helps his chances. Remind him that work ethic in the off-season also counts to this. If he improves in the Spring and the coach has a warm fuzzy about him being a better player next fall, he might kick some money over.

But also, since you didn't negotiate earlier, you need to weigh asking about it strongly versus having your son playing with a team he likes.

Thanks everyone for your replies. he is D1. I posted here by mistake, i guess, as i am new to this website. but also i guess i wished i had negotiated better last year. maybe someone can learn from my mistake. That being said, tho, maybe it wasn't such a big mistake overall b/c he is very happy. i am the one worried about money. he lives for today, i see student loans down the road for millions of years. again, he loves the team, coach, and school, and academically the school is excellent. last year we were told this year's money was negotiable. i guess i will wait and see. thanks again.

Could it be related to this forum in that it helps educate parents in what to look for when the scholarship offers start to come in?

I took it that way. But I did see your point once you raised it.
