Maybe someone from CBus will step up to the plate on this. Sure won't be me. Maybe Wexner should field a team sponsored by Victorias' Secret.

(Feel free to cross-post this on some chick board if you want. I never go there)

We could have them play at Crew stadium on off days, or as a part of doubleheaders. Crew players can be their cheerleaders. ;)

A 600K cap with a 16 game season. Any person willing to shell out that much cash with only 8 home games, that would probably only draw a few thousand at most (depending on who they can get to play) would be nuts. The minimum salary would equate to MLS min. salary if you take into account games played. $20K for what equates to half an MLS season. MLS is losing money with avg attendance of about 12,000-14,000. Any investor here would be lucky to get $200K back on their $600K investment. I would hope someday the women would have a league again, but this way there would probably be another failed womens league in less than 2 seasons.

the only way to make money on this would be if they played in lingerie or naked, it's that simple. and as much it would be fun to see, the sport doesn't need to be demeaning like the lingerie bowl...

600,000 player salary
+90,000 other salaries/(trainer,coach,office,fluff)
+50,000 franchise fees
+38,400 ??? stadium fees/security/etc (? x 8)
+86,400 travel/lodging/per diem ($360 x 30 x 8)

864,800 per season
or
roughly 108,100 needed per home game
or
5,405 attending at $20 a ticket/10,810 attending at $10 a ticket

I have no idea how realistic the stadium fees/security/intangibles is and we would assume there might be other sources of revenue like posters or photo shoots (anybody remember the movie Slap Shot (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076723/quotes) with the fashion shows? - "I'm gonna open up this f*gg*t robe and wiggle my d*** at em. And do you know why? Because I want you to have a heart-attack and die so we don't have to do this s*** anymore. You and your f***ing fashion shows.)

Actually, it equates to far more than the MLS minimum salary. There are players in MLS who are paid $11,700 for 32 games ($365.63 per game). $20,000 for 16 games in this women's league would be $1250 per game; more than three times as much per game. MLS struggles to break even with a $1.9M salary cap. I don't see any way that a women's league will draw enough revenue in ticket sales, merchandise sales, and sponsorship to pay out 1/3 what MLS pays it's players.

Looking at Grouchy's numbers, and the expenses look very conservative to me, I just don't see how their going to come up with that kind of cash, let alone have any left over to pocket.

I've seen some of the prospectus information that USL sends out when they think maybe they've got a sucker on the line...er, I mean a potential team owner. Somehow they manage to make even PDL seem like a paying proposition, which is a ludicrous concept.

They do it by assuming a good deal of sponsorship money. You can pretty much make up any number you want and it's theoretically possible. Highly freakin unlikely, but within the realm of possibility.

I recall the old Columbus Xoggz, who hired a really sharp, aggressive young guy who went crazy gathering up sponsorships: a car dealer, a sports drink that nobody knew was bottled in Newark, Big Bear stores, a whole bunch of stuff. Amazing. (The guy is now Assistant Director of Corporate Sales and Marketing for the Bengals)

So it can be done, although it's the exception.

Ah, the Xoggz!
And the Xiggs,
and the Stars,
and the old old old Magic wasn't it, played at Clippers stadium.
Even the capitals were exciting.

and the Invaders- well maybe thats going to far but talk about an owner completely screwing it up.He buys the historic Canton team. He thought he was going to make enough off of ticket sales to pay his players! Nobody bought tickets to the game and he stopped paying the players.

I seem to remember the Xoggz actually played in playoff games. If memory serves me right, player/coach Nick Roberts jumped into a game and hit the winning goal.

We can only keep our fingers crossed and hope we always have soccer in Columbus.
