Best of luck to them. My thumbs are crossed for Leipzig, even though they're up against my old hometown.

I love Frankfurter Allgemeine's headline:

„Wenn Erich Honecker
das noch erlebt hätte!“

Vielen Glück, Ihr Löwen!

I saw the presentation and got to say that it was a very political and emotional vote. I did not see many factual arguments for them, but we'll see.

kicker's take on the vote:

July 2, 2003: Winter Games 2010 are decided. If Vancouver gets the vote, then Toronto will withdraw from 2012. If Salzburg gets the vote, then Leipzig has extremely bad chances as German city Königssee would host the bob-sled events.

July 15, 2003: all bids for 2012 have to be filed. As it seems Moscow, Madrid, London, Paris, Rio, Toronto and New York will be the opponents. kicker estimates Leipzig's chances against the European rival about 20% and against the others about 10%.

Fall 2003: the TV and Internet rights will be sold. Most money is coming from the USA, which will influence the vote definitely.

June 2004: a pre-selection by IOC will happen. kicker estimates Leipzig's chances to survive about 50% if they manage to find a very charismatic committee soon. Problem for them: IOC wants a million-city and they already complained that Leipzig has too many events outside of the city.

July 2005: the final vote. kicker rates Leipzig to be without any chance. Leipzig's role: they are the lamb that is sacrifised - they shall gain experience and do the mistakes later bids shall learn from, as in 2016 the German NOK wants to start with one of the four million cities (Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Cologne).
