what part of their EPL deal forbids them for selling PPV matches on Dish?
The Man U v. 'Pool match this weekend is a good example.
Non-compete clause with FSC?

setanta wants to drive subscriptions to their channel, rather than one-off pay per view events. setanta always carries the early sunday game, and FSC the late one. They are banking on people switching to directv or getting globecast or itvn to get setanta.

I know that much.
Iwanted something a little more specific, some "inside baseball" since we have ppl here who usually know the rights issues involved.
BTW - I'm going to a local restaurant/bar tomorrow AM to have some breakfast watch it for free. Now that the bars get the channel via Direct TV, they don't charge $25 anymore to watch games like this.
:D

Isn't Man U v Liverpool on Setanta Sports USA for free (for your $15/month anyway)?

I still feel they need to score more deals. It wouldnt hurt setanta to get a deal with time warner, comcast and cablevision would it? Surely more deals are better for them than not? or am i missing something?

sure. I'm talking about on services, like Dish and cable, that don't have Setanta.
Sorry I didn't make that more clear.

Here's my thought process...

Dish and Setanta can't come to an agreement, so Dish customers do not have access to Setanta's regular channel like Direct customers.
Same with cable providers
But Setanta could keep the pressure on Dish to do a deal by buying PPV time on Dish and selling the coverage of the game like they have done in previous years, because they know Dish customers will pay $20-30 to see the game.

Seems like a no-brainer to me, but I'm guessing some sort of rights issue would prevent Setanta from doing that or they would have done it by now.

Ah. Yeah, that would be nice to have as an option.

Perhaps you should investigate ITVN?

Ok Matt, stop it.
I asked a question. If you don't have the answer, don't answer just to be a smart ass.
We've got plenty of that around here without you contributing more.

How is that being a smart ass exactly?

The reason there is no PPV on Dish is because Setanta wants Dish to carry the channel, and they haven't come to terms for that to happen yet. So why should Setanta allow it's marquee product to go on Dish or any cable outlet?

Because they'll make money, that's why.

First...I know about ITVN, and I specifically asked about DISH!
The subject wasn't "How can I see Setanta?" or "Help me watch EPL matches".
I was asking about Dish and Setanta dealings only.

I post here every frickin' day. I know about ITVN, and I've made my position on it very, very clear.
It's not an option.
As I've said before, I'm not paying full price to watch a downconverted broadcast video stream on my HDTV, especially when I can see the same games FOR FREE streamed on my desktop at 750k from China, or wait a couple of hours and download the game via torrent.

Here's my question, again...
Setanta has a product that Dish and cable footy fans want.
Why can't they buy PPV time on Dish and cable networks to broadcast select games?
In doing this they would 1. keep pressure on Dish and Setanta to pick up their channel, and 2. make even more money off the games.

To get on Dish and cable to cave in Setanta needs leverage. That leverage, as ESPN knows and efffectively utilizes, is the viewers. If people can get an idea of what they are missing, they would be more willing to harrass their providers into getting the channel.

Um, people who don't know how great the EPL is aren't ordering it on PPV so they can find out.

ESPN has a product footy fans want next week, namely Barcelona v Chelsea. They are airing the match, but on ESPN Deportes.

Why aren't they offering the match on PPV then on DirectTV, Dish, and cable?

Because they want greater carraige at terms ESPN wants and subscriptions for ESPN Deportes. Setanta is doing the same thing.

Doubtful. There is a very, very big difference btwn Setanta and ESPN.

Absolutely, but it's the same principle. ESPN just has a slight advantage in the leverage department.

Incidentally, my cable system now offers ESPN Deportes everywhere, and not just in areas with a bunch of Hispanic people.

we also don't know if the sublicensing agreement with FSI forbids pay per view. you may notice that setanta premium (the ppv option for bars and restaurants) is not carrying any EPL, so that may be indicative of that.
