Not a particularly well-known one, but...
Tony Vidmar
Best: Qualifying for the World Cup with Australia for the first time in 32 years, in his final campaign for the national team,
Worst: Being diagnosed with a heart condition that forced him to retire before the tournament.

Oh for crying out f-cking loud.
Landon Donovan
Best: Getting to the quarter finals of the World Cup 2002 and being hailed as one of the players of the tournament
Worst: Trundling back to MLS bruised and beaten, after a a few months on the bench for Bayern Leverkusen
Cry out a bit louder. It's Bayer Leverkusen. ;)

PELE!!!!
Best: Hmm... Many:
- His hat-trick against france as a 17-year old
- His 8 goals in 1 game
- I could name MANY others, lol
Worst: When he indentionally broke a player's leg, fathering a few illegitamate children
That was in a friendly against West Germany in 1965. The player whose leg was broken was Willi Giesemann.
For those that can read German, here's an article about that foul. (http://www.welt.de/data/2005/06/25/736668.html)

Van Basten
Best: It hardly get's better than his bicycle kick against Den Bosch.
Worst: Obviously picking up his injury against Groningen. That's where all the nastiness started.
That's not a career highlight, just a great goal - for Van Basten the winning goal vs. the USSR was a top moment, or maybe one of his great displays in the Champions League with Milan.

I'd like to hear what Ombak or tpmazembe say on this, but for Pele two
moments that stick out are: winning the World Cup final vs. Sweden in
1958 - he'd promised his father he'd win the WC with Brazil after the loss
of 50. And: the 4-1 demolition of Italy in the 70 WC final. That was a really
magical team, and it's gone down as one of the most beautiful ever.

That goal and game had to be it for Van Basten.

It wasn't the winning goal. Gullit scored the winning goal (though Van Basten had the assist). You could say the entire EC was very positive for him, after a very hard debut-season with Milan.
Perhaps the final against Steua is a better 'finest moment', but for me the goal against Den Bosch stands out as it was just what Van Basten represented: Ajax was having a hard time and Wouters put in a bad cross, but still Van Basten manages to score (with one of the best goals I've ever seen, but that's not the point). The moment the team really needed him, he scored goals. He has that advantage over other Dutch stars as Cruijff, Bergkamp and Rensenbrink.

Gerd Müller
Best: The final whistle in the 1974 World Cup final, knowing that his goal sealed Germany's victory.
Worst: Being subbed out of a Bundesliga game in February 1979. Notable for being the first time he was removed from a game due to bad form and not due to injury. For Müller it was a humiliating experience. He left Bayern soon afterwards.

Diego Simeone
Best: Getting Beckham sent off.
Worst: Getting Beckham sent off.
Perhaps, Materazzi probably has his best and worst moment for the same play.
Winston Smith

I didn't hear about this. That's a shame.

Zvonimir Boban
Best: Attacking a police officer at the Zagreb riot? Or the 1994 European Cup Final.
Worst: 1998 World Cup semifinal. Being dispossessed by Thuram in front of his own 18, from which Thuram scored the equalizer.

Perhaps, Materazzi probably has his best and worst moment for the same play.
I don't know, I would say-
Best: Playing an amazing World Cup and showing he actually can be a world class defender
Worst: Constantly being benched at Inter by Mancini and when he did play - being labeled as a butcher, getting sent off, and such

Francesco Toldo is a player who you can say had the best and worst moments of his career in one tournament
Best: Leading Italy to the Euro 2000 final, making crucial saves, saving 1 penalty during the semi-final, and another 2 in the shootout: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m6Q-F6ZsL4Q
Worst: Making his only error of the tournament on Sylvain Wiltord's shot in the dying seconds of the Final.

Along the lines of Toldo...
Luis Arconada
Best: Made crucial saves against West Germany and Denmark en route to the EURO 84 final.
Worst: Allowing Platini's free kick to slip under his body for the winning goal in the EURO 84 final.
