There seems to be a large amount of debate over who the league MVP should be (as seen in the Carlisle v. Dyer thread), but there's not been much talk about the other races. So I've decided to start one on the GOTY race, which MLSnet.com has basically shrunk down to 3 candidates - Troy Perkins, Matt Reis, and Joe Cannon. I'm just wondering who the fans feel ought to win this year's award.
In my just-a-little-biased opinion, it would have to be Reis. Played every minute of the season, has by far the most saves, the most shutouts, and the 2nd lowest GAA this season (only to Jon Conway, who I feel would've been a serious contender if he had played more than 12 games). Plus, Reis kept the Revs in games where we were rather outplayed. Without his efforts, the Revs would've been in the dogfight with KC and NY for the 4th spot at best.
So, chime in, people. Who's #1 on your list?

Troy Perkins this year.
but mark my words for next season, Matt Pickens!!! watching the DCU vs CHI game last weekend, he looked like a monster in front of the net.

Perkins faced what, like 5 shots the first 20 games of the season? And after the shots started coming, so did the goals against.
Reis all the way,

I have always thought Troy was the front runner based on DC's performance and defensive record early on in the season, not based on anything stellar he did in net. He was good but not dominating like previous GK of the year winners like Cannon.
I would say based on an entire season's worth of work, shotouts, GAA, save %, PK save %, and to a lesser extent team performace....it should be Reis.
I think Troy has a chance but is going to be the victim of a poor second half by DC United, much like Novak will be for coach of the year.

Save Percentage I would say is a better indicator of the performance of a GK. Why? Because it's the only one a Gk really controls. If he's not facing many shots, or worse, not saving many then even if he's on a good team he's going to be overrated:
Save Percentage:
Reis : 77.47%
Cannon : 67.80%
Perkins : 71.42%
Hartman : 73.33%
Infact, the better your team, the better your save percentage should be...because probability would suggest that if you're getting peppered, one's going to get by sooner than later. Take Luongo in Florida, for an example from the NHL. His save % is huge, but G.A.A is quite high.
Which leads me nicely to GAAA:
Reis : 1.09
Cannon : 1.55
Perkins : 1.13
Hartman : 1.14
So, Perkins was barely better than Hartman who was on an LA team that super flopped this year and didn't even make the playoffs.
Head to head:
Matt Reis - NE 32 2880 182 141 35 1.09 12-8-12 10
Troy Perkins - DC 30 2700 140 100 34 1.13 15-6-9 8
So, Reis beat him out in everything apart from wins, which judging by the other numbers was nothing to do with him.
So, I'd save that's a pretty good case for Reis.

GAA is a meaningless stat.

I think Joe Cannon should win. Without him, the Rapids would not have made it anywhere this year. They were seriously underpowered on offense. And believe me, as a Red Bulls fan I have learned to recognize something like that.

Nowak isn't going to win Coach of the Year because Bob Bradley turned the turd of the league, Chivas USA, into one pretty good club. regardless of the late season collapse, Bradley was going to win this one hands down.
