Ok...I'm interested in buying a used Vee Dub...um..is it worth it? I hear so many mixed stories about this company.. I'm a college student who wants to get a decent car that doesn't cost too much, but will last a few years until I have a secure job and stuff. Any advice on used VWs or other brands in particular?

the series before this had really nice interiors. the GTIs are overweight as hell, which makes them slow and suffer from really bad understeer. the gti and vw crowd has gotten pretty obnoxious over the past few years, too.
as for mx. well, i never had any mx problems with mine while i had it. it was pretty good.

I think that anyone that refers to their volkswagen as their 'Vee Dub' should automatically have thier car repossessed.

I've owned two Jettas. I don't know why. The first one was a piece of crap. The second one is even worse. It gets recalled every four months or so. It's even been recalled for a recall that wasn't done properly. Of course most of us already found that out when the break lights stuck on and drained the battery and it had to be towed and the battery replaced for $200 (not covered by recall). So for that recall, it was recalled, I had to get it fixed again, and now it's recalled for the same damn thing! That's not a big deal cuz that's paid for by VW. But the lack of quality in every thing on car is the worst of it. I will now never, never, never buy another Volkswagen for as long as I live. I only still drive this thing cuz it's paid off and I really don't want a car payment for a while.
What is it exactly that is attracting you to VW? Which car and for what reason?
I'd suggest checking out the used car best buys on Consumer Reports. I find them to be pretty accurate most of the time.

No special reason. It just seems like a fun car to drive. I'd like to a Japansese car...but they are hard to come around...especially Toyotas, Hondas, and Suburus.

Wow, talk about coincidences........it's pouring here.....I just came back from lunch and as I'm walking through my offices parking deck......I see a Passat station wagon with the tail lights still on....apparently stuck. I'm trying right now to find out whose car it is to warn them.
Oh yeah......I own a Jetta GLI and have really liked it. But I know many people who have had problems with all the other Jetta varieties.

My mom has a '96 Golf and it drives and drives and just keeps on driving, we hardly had any problems with it at all (maybe also due to yearly inspetcions and it being mainly driven in town, has 'only' 120k km or so). From what I know the VWs made in the late 90ies and the early 00s (how do you say that) are breaking down more often, but the ones before and after that are quite reliable (also my own experience). At the other hand I read that VW is shifting production for some cars for the American market back to Europe due to quality problems in the plants in mexico and Brazil. Maybe that will help as well.
The GTI is surely a really nice car, and I don't think you'll run into a lot of problems. But, at the other hand, you have to treat it like a German, ie run inspections every now and then. At least if you do that here you get a warantee for the next year so they rent a car for you if yours breaks down and pays most of the expenses.

I've had a Corrado and an Audi 4000. Both were fantastic when running, and both spent quite a bit of time not running and being outlandishly expensive to repair. The roommate has a 71 Superbeetle Conv that still runs nicely. I'd take his or a new VW, but get rid of the thing before the warranty is up.
