Today on PTI they showed Robinson missing the ball on the Own Goal and Tony said that Robinson was an idiot for not picking up the ball.

Somebody needs to email this idiot and explain the rule of the backpass.

Not having seen the goal you were referring to I'm shooting in the dark, but could he have been saying "Take the foul for illegal backpass, its better than giving up a goal!"? The RBNY keeper did this in the NY - Colorado game last week.

Well if he did he didn't mention it. I don't think these guys know enough about soccer to mention that.

That wasn't the situation here, the ball is rolling harmlessly towards him and he just misses it completely. It's not that the ball was dangerously put in front of the net by a defender and he had to pick it up to avoid it from being a goal.

In this case, PTI stands for Pardon The Imbecile.........

This is exactly why guys like this don't like the sport. Because if they DO ever talk about it, they risk exposing themselves as know-nothings.

Well if you see the proper replay on good video, you can see that it wasn't that simple to say he completely missed it as he kicked at the proper place in space and time to make contact with the ball but it just happened that the ball, which was on a slow roll, took a hop out of nowhere at the exact moment it needed to.. It couldn't have been more perfect if the ball was radio controlled..:)

Plenty of discussion about Kornheiser here and here. Tony is just a comedian with a sports angle. Nothing more. I guess since it looked funny to him, or to whoever put together his highlight package, he had to comment on it.

Having spoken with Wilbon, very casually, in the past, and with all the other sports he covers at a much higher level, I wouldn't expect him to be well versed in the rules of soccer (if it was Wilbon today). Heck, the ref last Saturday in the United-Revs game missed a clear back pass, and he's supposed to know the rules.

Now if they had bookended the comments with some criticism of the England No. 1-perhaps calling for his head, or the return of "Calamity" James, that would have been worth tuning in to.

Thx,

Jay!

When they(or anyone else really) dont mention soccer there is constant whining. I can watch SportsCenter or any show really and tell you when someone doesnt know what theyre talking about.

Reali mentioned the backpass rule during the corrections segment at the end of the show.

I was going to ask that in my post, like maybe did "stat boy" correct them, but I thought I'd be giving him too much credit. My bad. Since he did, I can't see what all the fuss was about. Someone obviously knew it would get a laugh, so that's why it was in there. Can't really get angry over it.

Much Adu about nothing, here.

Thx,

Jay!

I wasn't angry, I was just pointing out the people who flame soccer don't even know what is going on. And when the video is played right in front of them and they don't get it, it's not fair that they bash it.

I'm glad the StatBoy got it.

Reali has been spotted at DC United games.

What I like about Wilbon is that he knows what he doesn't know. When he has written about soccer in the past, he hasn't tried to write from any basis of authority beyond what he has researched.
