Deisler spoke in an interview about his time in Berlin after he signed with Bayern Munich. This caused some attention over here:

"Hertha asked me to keep the decision silent for half a year to avoid unrest. From day to day I got more cramped. On October 10 a big story about me was lying in the locker room. It was about the money I got from Bayern Munich and that I cheated Berlin and their fans."

On the taxation matter: "They wanted to know something about the money, which in fact was a loan and was repayed later on [yeah, sure, 10 M loan for a 20 year old millionaire...; that for sure was illegal signing bonus that later on was paid back and declared as loan to avoid a trial]. The taxation was not the worst - this was that I was hated throughout Berlin over the night and I couldn't do anything against it."

"And then something incredible happened. Hertha asked me to excuse at the fans for getting the money, for not telling earlier about the contract and that I cheated. And this although I risked my reputation for them."

Hertha GM Dieter Hoeneß replied: "If we had known about the payment, then we would have enforced an immediate transfer. The 10 M cheque was the key - we got to know about it from the newspapers. Also, we did not force him to anything. We - Hertha, his agent Neubauer and Deisler - agreed on not telling the transfer"

"It was clear that the situation would not be easy for Deisler after the public got to know about the transfer. That's why I asked him to tell the media what Hertha did for his career and how difficult the decision for the transfer was. We never forced him to anything and we never told him to excuse at the fans."
