Sorry to burst your bubble, but that's not an official FIFA award. He's nominated for the FIFPro player of the year award, FIFPro is a worldwide football players' union, completely independant of FIFA. Not that it's not an honor to be nominated, just that you were misrepresenting the award.

oops, my bad:D

Well maybe this list has more legitimacy than the FIFA award. The FIFA award is all names and it doesnt recoginize the actual player of the year (ie, imo Deco in 2004).

Then again Rio Ferdinand, Cafu and Cicinho are on this Fifpro list as well, not sure they deserve to be.

Only defenseman that can say had a better year than Marquez is Cannavaro, and maybe Puyol...but those of us who know futbol know Marquez is a better defenseman than Puyol.

They are not picking the best defender per se.

But the best eleven.

He has a good shot of getting it.

But knowing the euros; it will be something like Puyol, Terry, Thuram, Cannavaro. :(

hence, the fifa gala is the fifa prom, and the winner is the prom queen.

it's a popularity contest.

I don't think Rafa is better than Puyol defensively but I do think he's a better overall player.

Puyol is all hustle and hacks, he covers for what little Marquez doesnt cover himself. Even the brits at bbc and fourfourtwo know whose better.

Edit: misunderstood last commment, my bad

well theres the FIFA list, what a ripoff.

Only 3 defenders nominated, surprise surprise. Cannavaro merits the award but Thuram and Lahm? Thuram had a good 3 or 4 games, which happened to be in the world cup...and he gets the nod over Marquez...bullshit. Marquez had a much better year by far, but whatever. Phillip Lahm?? hes a good attacking wingback, but Marquez did a lot more to deserve to be on this list. Chingen a su ******** madre FIFA.
