Inspired by the other thread.... what I meant that beautiful play that did not end up as goal.

This one is when Ronaldo and Zidane were tearing up La Liga.

This is a video of Francesco Totti and Antonio Cassano vs. Reggina in 2003. They were almost telepathic with their passing, starting at midfield and winding up in the box. The video doesn't work at the end, but I'll tell you the ending: Cassano shot is saved.

Too bad that this two could not get along with each other. And i could not see the last 3 seconds. So I do not know the last shot.

Marcelo balboa's bicycle kick for USA vs. Colombia in 1994. What a goal that would have made. We were 2-0 up at the time and would have been 3-0. Instead we wound up winning 2-1

Well, they were practically like brothers at Roma, but once Cassano became stubborn and decided he didn't want to re-sign and left for Madrid, then Totti got mad at him. But on the field, their connection was almost telepathic:

That would have became one of the top 20 goals in WC history.....

I thought Cassano also insulted Totti&s mother.

Never heard that, are you sure you don't mean Materazzi/Zidane? ;) :p

I forgot where I heard it. May be even over here in bigsoccer. Cassano used to hang around Totti's house. One day, Cassano was rude to Totti's mother and Totti confronted him or something liked that.... it could be an urban legend.

Hmmm who would be the leaker of such a story, Totti, Cassano, Totti's mom? Or there were other people present?

When I read the title of this thread, I thought about that.

Yea, I was under the impression that Pele's "miss" was basically labled the greatest goal not scored.

Didn't Pele also hit a remarkable shot against England in that same world cup ... from the halfway line that almost went in. Had he scored that, and the dummy against Uruguay - how legendary would that have been?

May be you are talking about this one... the second shot from the footage. It was againts the Czech Republic.

Yeah maybe.. unfortunately, Etisilat (the UAE's only internet provider) has blocked youtube.com from being accessed by the public.

One near miss that springs to mind was the Sweden - Senegal 2nd round match in 2002 world cup. The scores were locked @ 1-1 deep into 2nd half sudden death extra time. A Swedish player (I think it was Henrik Larsson) broke down the right wing and found Anders Svensson in the box (at about the penalty spot) but he still had about two defenders between him and the goal. but Svensson trapped the ball with one foot and did this amazing 360 sort of turn and shoot all in one move, completely leaving his defender for dead while crashing a shot against the upright. Unfortunately, the shot just missed the top corner of the goal and hit the woodwork but that would have been one hell of a golden goal.

Mile Sterjovski in the Socceroos' 2-0 win against Bahrain could have made it 3-0 if his volley from about 30 metres went underneath the crossbar instead of hitting it.

The Pele lob against Czechoslovakia would have been a beauty and there's one from the 1934 WC that I read about. Galateo, an Argentine player, dribbled past five Swedish players but he couldn't score. He did score later in the match but he only went past three players.

One of the best I've ever seen occurred in the 1987 European Cup final.
The main run was made by Paulo Futre; Magalhaes feeding him the return 1-2 pass; and Madjer fails to get a touch with the goal at his mercy. Classic Futre in action.
(the play is right at the beginning of this video)
