but Svensson trapped the ball with one foot and did this amazing 360 sort of turn and shoot all in one move, completely leaving his defender for dead while crashing a shot against the upright.
It was a very unique move. I don't remember anything just like it. Indeed would have been an incredible goal.

I'll vote Eder's thundering free kick vs. Argentina at WC1982 which hit the crossbar and Zico scored off of. Filliol I think managed to get a fingertip on it as I look at the video replay. The swerve on this FK was illegal. I really wish that one had went in for memories' sake.

maybe not the best ever, but i love the way he can just turn and have a good look at goal, but he opts to set himself up for an amazing shot.

I remember Stoichkov scoring an absolute screamer of a free kick from 40 yards out at USA 94 but it was disallowed for some reason.

Pele's dummy in the 1970 WC.Dummies.
Pelé in 1970 'scored' a hattrick of fabulous 'almost-goals':
Against Czchekoslovakia, the famous one, from (before) the middle of the field:

Then the mithic header saved by Banks:

Last but not least the dummy you refer to against Uruguay:

That's what 'should' have happened:

In that same game there is still his incredible return of a free kick by Uruguayan goalie Mazurckiewicz.
(I'll bring that clip up in a minute)

On the opening day of the 1975/76 season, Reading's Tommy Youlden curled a 30 yard free-kick into the side netting.
With everyone running out for the goal kick, the referee that day decided that absolutely everyone had got it wrong, and actually the ball had gone in for a goal. The Rochdale players and fans were none too pleased, but the Reading players suppressed their laughted and accepted the goal.
So there you have it - an example that it totally true to the thread title - the only good effort on goal that missed, that was actually a goal.
