Didn't I just read in the paper that George had a liver transplant? I'm serious, this is not a joke about his drinking problems. Hope everything goes well for me.

OG - Original Gansta!
George Best recovering from a liver transplant--one would hope he would make an appearance, but to quote Mister Best from one of the guys Dave:
"I spent all my money on fast cars and women. The rest I just wasted."
and of course his golazo from taking a swig of a brew, taking the corner kick, and hitting it into the net--the stuff of legend.
Maybe, 2003 Legends Reunion, or do we have to wait until 2006 or 2011?
getting misty eyed here... Cheers!

I don't know, but I'm seeing a lot of parallels:
The "originals" were top draws from 1974 through 1978, when new and shoddy management begat years of moribund sides on the field, and sluggish sales at the box office, then a sudden turnaround, a magical unbeaten home season, and then...within 2 years the league was gone.
Now granted, MLS isn't in the same shaky situation as NASL was (is it?) -- NASL was never this stable.
But the comparisons are eerie...

An article is here:

Best quote from ol' George was when a reporter accused him of "wasting his millions" and he replied:
"Look, I spent forty percent of it on booze, forty percent of it on women, and, yeah -- I did waste the other twenty percent."
Or something like that.

Close, but you left out the most important part: the booze. :D "I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered."
